About this listen

A terrible past, a chilling present, and a deadly future...

In the frigid aftermath of a Boxing Day tragedy, ageing DCI Charles Cook faces a sinister conundrum—the lifeless body of eight-year-old Harry Dickens is found lying in a quiet country road, while his Aunt Janice, fourth in line to inherit the family business, is reported missing. The crimes become the catalyst for an investigation poised to shatter the rural Lincolnshire community.

But there is no time to let the dust settle. The wealthy Dickens family are coming to terms with their loss when a grisly Christmas package is delivered, along with a deadly ransom—end their centuries-old dynasty or Janice Dickens dies.

Memories that Cook had suppressed for a decade intertwine with the bloody case, sending him spiralling him into a nightmare, offering DC Devon the chance to step up and finally show him what she’s capable of.

However, as Cook and Devon form their uneasy father-daughter alliance, the investigation unearths the family’s horrific past, casts deadly shadows on their present, and reveals a cold and barren future for all involved.

Will Cook put his past behind him long enough to untangle the web, will Janice Dickens be found before the killer strikes again, or will the winter frost claim more than just a child's innocence?

From the USA Today bestselling author of the Wild Fens Murder Mysteries, A Winter of Blood inaugurates the DCI Cook Murder Mystery series, and is perfect for fans of rural crime series such as JM Dalgliesh, LJ Ross, Simon McCleave, Ann Cleeves, and Val McDermid.

A breath-taking murder mystery dubbed a delightful, modern take on a Charles Dickens classic, that will keep you listening through the long, cold winter nights.

While the story was ok there was too much extended and unnecessary description for me, which made the performance longer than it needed to be. I found my mind wandering off because of it.
I am not going to following the rest the series.

Or my cup of tea

The story was unnecessarily long with long periods of detail that had me drifting off! I found the whole tale difficult to follow and the narration depressing and without expression or humour. Not for me.

Over long and without any humour

Brilliant storyline great suspense all the way to the end. Time to find my next read.

Kept me guessing to the end!

Kept me listening, A twisty interweaved plot,.. a lot of characters to keep track, but absorbing. However for me, living in Lincolnshire, was the awful 'local' accent interpretation. It wasn't Lincolnshire- too northern!!

It was good but...

The story line is intriguing however the narration is somewhat of a slow, ‘droll’ and unnecessary - which distracted from the plot 🥺

Good story

A brilliant story full of intrigue, with a delightfully convoluted plot. Full of horrifying crimes offset by acts of gentle kindnss and empathetic characters.

More twists than a "Curley World"! Can't wait for the next one!

too many characters in families and who was who became difficult to follow making it confusing in early chapters.

The development of the plot and characters

Another amazingly written storyline, brilliant characters and some prejudicial character traits brought to the fore. Old school behaviours within old school policing . Can’t wait to read the next instalment.

So glad I found this author

I'm finding this book very slow and hard to carry on. I've 90mins left so not giving up now. The characters are interesting and hopefully the end will be worth the wait.

A little slow
