About this listen

Magnus Pym, ranking diplomat, has vanished, believed defected. The chase is on: for a missing husband, a devoted father, and a secret agent.

Pym’s life, it is revealed, is entirely made up of secrets. Dominated by a father who is also a confidence trickster on an epic scale, Pym has, from the age of 17, been controlled by two mentors.

It is these two, racing each other and time itself, who are orchestrating the search to find the perfect spy....

Critic reviews

"Le Carré’s best book, one of the enduring peaks of imaginative literature in our time." ( Los Angeles Times)

A wonderful story of love, loyalty and betrayal. Hugely rich beyond a mere spy story. John Le Carre’s narration is perfectly pitched as he of course knows what matters and what the characters are thinking. His accents are sometimes odd and the recording is a bit fuzzy, but I found those irritations were minor and far exceeded by the authenticity of the reading. I now understand why this is hailed as such masterful literature.

Extraordinarily engaging and emotional
