About this listen

C.J. Cooke’s latest chilling tale, a Radio 2 Book Club Pick, The Book of Witching, is available to buy now!

* * *

Something has walked the floors of the Ormen for over a century.

Something that craves revenge…

*Longlisted for the Wilbur Smith Adventure Writing Prize*

1901. On board the Ormen, a whaling ship battling through the unforgiving North Sea, a woman awakes. Attacked and dragged there against her will, it’s just her and the crew – and they’re all owed something only she can give them.

Decades later, the Ormen is found drifting across the ocean, deserted. Just one body is left on board, his face and feet mutilated, his cabin locked from the inside. Everyone else has vanished.

Now. Urban explorer Dominique travels into the near-permanent darkness of the northernmost tip of Iceland. She's searching for the final resting place of the Ormen’s wreck, and she’s determined to uncover its secrets.

But she’s not alone. Something is here with her. And it’s seeking revenge…

C.J Cooke is fast becoming one of my favourite authors. Loved this book, didn’t want it to end, A very original ghost story that even touches on trauma and how it effects the collective. Great narration too.

Loved this book 🧜‍♀️

Marvellous haunting story with a marvellous twist in the end. The setting is beautifully constructed and the plot moves across time and ice with great pace. Excellent!

Gripping, chilling tale!

Not sure about this book by C J Cooke. I prefer the others by her that I have listened too. Maybe because they were more “creepy and spooky” all through the story, as this wasn’t until the last hour or so. It wasn’t bad, but not great either.

OK I guess

I absolutely loved this. Twists and turns galore. I am now looking out for anything this lady writes.

Brilliant

This was a compelling story. Intensely claustrophobic. Brilliant performance by the narrator with so many voices and emotions to create and a complex narrative structure to navigate. An authentic projection of the uncanny throughout.

Atmospheric and terrifying

Good plot with tension throughout, and beautifully read. The chapter titles became jarring after a while but the story still flowed well.

Great characterisation and intensity

I loved the book as with all by this author.
Only problem is one of the last chapters is not there though one short chapter is repeated twice.
Wonderful writing and well presented.

One of the last chapters is missing

The uniqueness of this tale and superb narration cannot be denied, though I found sadly that I was unable to finish the book due to the all too regular graphic descriptions of animal cruelty and death. Though I appreciate that the scenarios detailed are most likely very accurate for the period in which this novel is primarily set, and I do applaud the author for their clearly in depth research and wonderfully descriptive writing, it unfortunately was something that I myself found too upsetting to listen too. The human suffering is obviously also difficult to hear, it does seem to be somewhat essential too understanding the characters and plot, though the instances of this does not seem (thankfully), to be as regular or as graphic in description as the aforementioned animal scenarios which, only in my lay opinion, did not need to be included in such detail. Stuck it out through first couple of scenarios as genuinely appreciate the uniqueness of this tale, but when after whale hunt the animal scenarios kept coming, I sadly had to give up on this title.

Superb narration of unique tale, not one for animal lovers though.

I’m still partway through this audiobook and I’m really enjoying the story so far. It’s engaging and troubling (in a good way, as you’d expect from this genre and author!).

My only bit of constructive feedback is that the way the chapters are named and numbered make it very hard to keep track of where you’re up to. I know this is a method of chapter numbering that this author likes to use but I’m not clear on what it adds to the reader’s experience and, certainly in an audiobook, it detracts a bit.

Great story, difficult to keep place

Fantastic story that goes back and forth. Harrowing in parts but a brilliant ending. An excellent ghost story
