Simon (°1995, Belgium) obtained a Master’s degree in Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy in Internal Diseases in 2018 (Summa Cum Laude) at Ghent University. From 2018, he conducted his doctoral research at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (Ghent University). His research was situated in what he refers to as the interesting but challenging triangle between cardiovascular health, glycaemic control, and exercise in people with type 1 diabetes. He obtained his PhD in July 2023, entitled "Glycaemic control, cardiovascular health and physical activity in people with type 1 diabetes - A challenging triangle to target". With this work, he has won the Faculty thesis prize 2023 for best PhD dissertation at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of Ghent University, in the category Translational and Clinical Research. He has also undertaken applied postdoctoral research into the role of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in athletic populations. Currently, he is a postdoctoral researcher in the field of exercise physiology and metabolism (focusing on carbohydrate metabolism and its hormonal regulation), and type 1 diabetes. Simon’s personal interests include exercise physiology, muscle metabolism and training, with a specific interest in endurance sports performance (mainly cycling). Healthy lifestyle, aging, and nutrition are also aspects that Simon is interested in.
