I'm a lifelong writer. After receiving a masters degree in journalism from Northwestern University, I've worked as a newspaper reporter in Chicago, magazine editor, and speechwriter. Together with my two older sons, we compiled, edited and published "Down Time: Great Writers on Diving". The book is still in print. Later, my youngest son decided to write his senior college history thesis about a US Navy bombing squadron in WW2 that my father flew with in the Pacific. And when it was finished he said, "Dad, there's a lot more to know about those men and that time. You should write a book." So I began talking with squadron members, their families, experts and authors, archivists and anyone else who might help me understand. Unlike bombers that flew in large formations, frequently escorted by fighters, these men flew alone above the Pacific -- 1,000 miles out and 1,000 miles back, on search grids that looked like spokes on a wagon wheel, often 50 feet or less above the waves. I heard their stories first-hand. I saw the photos of once-young men, some of whom never came home. The result is "Solo Into The Rising Sun." An intimate look at men in war, their lives and their loves, long ago and far away.
