The publishing world was still mired in paper, corporate bureaucracy and middlemen when I started writing "The Way of Ages" and "Profound Accordance" in the summer of 1995. That world had changed a great deal by the time I published them in 2016 but the last ten or so of those years were spent developing and polishing the material while waiting for ebook technology to reach the point where it supported most of the modest features of Microsoft Word that I wanted those books to have, including but not limited to author-originated artwork, author-designed tables of contents, special fonts where needed and internal cross-references. I hope that trend continues - that digital publishing platforms will resist the temptation, as they become increasingly capable of doing so, to interfere in the author-reader communication. The corporate tendency over time to institute more and more requirements and restrictions would only replace the old bureaucracy with a new one and make ebooks look and feel more and more alike. The more diverse and individualistic ebooks are allowed to be, the less we need pine for a past in which every paper book was a unique experience.
