Since fourth grade, Monda has backpacked all over the United States and New Zealand, sharing her photos and outlandish stories on her Instagram account get_the_f_outside. Year-round, Monda works as a team member of Olympic Mountain Rescue, with a mission dedicated to backcountry rescue and mountain safety education. She also volunteers with Northwest Wilderness Programs, a nonprofit that provides experiences at a hot spring in a cave deep in the Cascades. She didn’t always enjoy this much time off to adventure. At age ten, she wanted to be a child actress, and over the years, she worked in film and theater, appearing on stages all over the Pacific Northwest. She didn’t want to sleep with directors, however, and preferred meals of bacon and Oreos to Barbie-size salads, so she buried her Hollywood hopes six feet under, next to her dignity and high heels that gave her bunions. Naturally, the next step for an actress was a competitive career in firefighting, so she drew a mustache over her lip, gained weight, and never looked back. She works as a structural and wildland firefighter/EMT, mentoring young women and pulling a twenty-four-hour schedule that allows for extended time off to explore her passion for backpacking and writing. Her goal for her book is to inspire the reader to be authentic, laugh at their mistakes, and challenge themselves.
