Summer 1923. Lady Eleanor Swift is finally persuaded by her butler, Clifford, to take a villa in the south of France for the season. She plans to do what a glamorous lady abroad should: long lunches on the balcony followed by lazy afternoons lounging by the pool. But when Clifford examines the wine cellar, he discovers there are no decent reds, but there is a very dead body. The victim is famous American movie-star Rex Armstrong. Poor Rex seems to have been stabbed with a sword from the film set. So how did he end up in Eleanor’s villa?

Late spring, 1936. As Kitty Underhay steps onto the sun-drenched station platform in Nice, on orders from Whitehall to track down a missing man, she hopes there will still be time to lie by the pool, preferably with a cocktail in hand. France, 1977. Baptiste is an intelligent but somewhat naive detective, sent to work in Clermiers, a town filled with corruption. A girl goes missing, presumed dead after bloody clothes are found close to an illicit party near an abandoned chateau. Baptiste believes he's nailed the culprit, the eccentric Gilles Mailloux. When he appears in court, the public call for the guillotine - and that's the sentence Mailloux gets. But as Mailloux awaits an appeal for clemency, he asks to see Baptiste, who's still haunted by the fact the girl's body remains missing.

It is August of 1704, and Matthew Corbett and his companions have narrowly escaped the island of Golgotha and are recuperating in the town of Alghero on the northwestern coast of Sardinia, currently under Spanish rule. Hudson Greathouse is at his limits, both mentally and physically, after their harrowing ordeal.

As Paris rediscovers its joie de vivre, Tabitha Knight, recently arrived from Detroit for an extended stay with her French grandfather, is on her own journey of discovery. Thanks to her neighbor and friend Julia Child, another ex-pat who's fallen head over heels for Paris, Tabitha is learning how to cook for her Grandpere and Oncle Rafe and Tabitha's sojourn is proving thoroughly delightful. That is, until the cold December day they return to Julia's building and learn that a body has been found in the cellar.

If there's one art the French have mastered as well as fine cuisine, it's haute couture. Tabitha and Julia are already accustomed to sampling the delights of the former. Now fashion is returning to the forefront in Paris, as the somber hues of wartime are replaced by vibrant colors and ultra-feminine silhouettes. The event goes well, but when Tabitha returns later that evening to search for a lost glove, she finds the lights still on—and the couturier dead, strangled by a length of lace.

1791. On découvre des cadavres dans la Seine, nus et la tête coupée. Malgré l'émoi populaire, Victor Dauterive, jeune officier de la nouvelle Gendarmerie n'a guère le temps de s'en préoccuper : Lafayette, son mentor, l'a chargé d'arrêter Marat, ce dangereux agitateur qui appelle au meurtre des aristocrates. Mais la mission tourne vite au cauchemar. Les vainqueurs de la Bastille sont-ils de vrais patriotes ou des activistes corrompus ? Existe-t-il vraiment un Comité secret agissant en sous-main pour le roi ? Et n'y aurait-il pas un lien avec ces corps flottant dans la Seine ?

Beatrice Hyde-Clare, détective malgré elle au temps de la Régence anglaise, se retrouve à enquêter sur un nouveau meurtre... au côté du duc de Kesgrave ! Miss Beatrice Hyde-Clare est bien décidée à ne plus jamais se mêler de ce qui ne la regarde pas. Donc, quand un dandy s'écroule raide mort à ses pieds, elle ne ressent aucune envie d'enquêter. Vraiment aucune.

Paris, juin 1889 : le monde entier se presse à l'Exposition Universelle où la Tour Eiffel, qui vient d'être achevée, accueille plus de mille visiteurs par jour. Les Français s'aperçoivent qu'ils ont un Empire colonial en découvrant les pavillons exotiques et les villages indigènes groupés au pied d'un des temples d'Angkor reconstitué. C'est dans cette ambiance de kermesse que survient une série de morts inexpliquées. Les victimes ne présentent aucune blessure apparente et, hormis le fait d'avoir été présentes à l'Exposition, rien ne les relie entre elles.

C'est ensuite Albert Saulx, un as de l'aviation française, retrouvé mystérieusement poignardé par une baïonnette allemande, au retour d'une mission aérienne, des roses rouges répandues dans le cockpit de son appareil.
