L'histoire commence en 1787. La frégate HMS Bounty, commandée par William Bligh, est affrétée par l'Amirauté Anglaise pour rallier Tahiti afin d'y récolter des plants d'arbre à pain. L'Amirauté prévoit d'acclimater cette plante dans les colonies anglaises des Indes Occidentales pour nourrir les esclaves. Le voyage est rendu difficile par le caractère exigeant du capitaine Bligh. Cinq prisonniers de guerre fuient l'Amérique en ballon et atterrissent sur une île du Pacifique. Ils vont devoir s'organiser en milieu inconnu. L'équipe se compose d'un ingénieur et son domestique, d'un reporter de guerre, un marin, un adolescent et Top, le chien. Étrangement nos aventuriers découvrent une caisse remplie d'un nécessaire de survie (armes, munitions, outils...) qui va les aider à s'installer.
