In the ethereal twilight of St. Petersburg's white nights, a young loner's solitary existence is transformed by a chance encounter with the enchanting Nastenka. This gloomy book is written in the form of letters exchanged between two cousins, Makar Devushkin and Varvara Dobroselova, who live on the same street in a shockingly deprived part of St. Petersburg Russia. Makar is a lowly clerk, who is being bullied at work and lives in the screened-off corner of someone else's kitchen and Varvara has taken in sewing as a means of avoiding falling into prostitution to make money. Their friendship is touching and sentimental, but it begins to suffer.

"The Christmas Tree and the Wedding" is a bittersweet story written in 1848, the year of revolutions throughout Europe. The story has an undercurrent reflecting the tumultuous changes of that year. The narrator, attending a Christmas party with the Christmas tree referenced in the title, sees the Guest of Honor take an undue interest in a young girl, the daughter of his host....

Crime and Punishment is a novel by Fyodor Dostoevsky that was first published in 1866. By closely examining the internal conflicts of his protagonist, Raskolnikov, Dostoevsky explores themes of guilt and redemption. The novel suggests that redemption is possible only through confession of guilt and an acceptance of personal responsibility for one’s thoughts and actions alike.

The Gambler brilliantly captures the strangely powerful compulsion to bet that Dostoevsky, himself a compulsive gambler, knew so well. The hero rides an emotional roller coaster between exhilaration and despair, and secondary characters such as the grandmother, who throws much of her fortune away at the gaming tables, are unforgettable.

Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky is considered one of the greatest Russian writers. His works have had a profound and lasting effect on 20th-century literature. His psychological penetration into the human soul had, in novels like Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov, a profound influence on the 20th century novel. He also wrote a number of brilliant short stories along these same lines. "The Wedding" is one of his best.

This short story by Fyodor Dostoevsky was first published in 1848. A man walking past a wedding is reminded of a children’s New Year’s Eve party he attended 5 years previously – a party that was clearly an excuse for the parents to make advantageous connections in a casual setting. As an outsider at the party, he was able to observe the guests in greater detail than most, and took particular note of the children playing by the Christmas tree, and the social hierarchy they unwittingly participated in. This recording is based on the 1918 translation by Constance Garnett.

Dostoevsky tells the story of a young tutor named Alexey Ivanovitch, who works in the household of an imperious Russian general. He wants to break through the wall of the established order in Russia. To reach this goal, he tries to achieve money and power by gambling. He descends further and further into a life of roulettes and casino living and sinks himself in the endless downward spiral of betting and loss. As he fails to resist the temptations of his addiction (the gambling), he finds himself engaged in unrequited love with Polina, the General's cruel yet seductive niece.
