Le portrait de Jésus que dessinent les trois premiers évangiles tout au long du récit de la Passion et de la Résurrection laisse apparaître, comme en filigrane, toute une série de figures du Premier Testament : "les figures de l'origine", Adam, Abel, Noé, Abraham et Joseph ; "les figures de l'histoire", de Moïse à Jérémie en passant par Josué, David surtout et Élie; "la figure de la fin" avec le serviteur souffrant qui représente la fin des figures.

Nous sommes habités par plus grand que nous-mêmes, mais nous n'en sommes pas conscients. Nous sommes pour ainsi dire endormis, emprisonnés dans le sommeil de l'insouciance ou de l'habitude.
