Arthur Evelyn St. John Waugh (October 28, 1903-April 10, 1966) was an English writer of novels, biographies, and travel books; he was also a prolific journalist and book reviewer. His most famous works include Decline and Fall (1928) and A Handful of Dust (1934), the novel, Brideshead Revisited (1945). He is recognized as one of the great prose stylists of the English language in the 20th century. In this recording, Waugh discusses God, religion, writing, and his conversion to Catholicism.

Sent down from Oxford for indecent behaviour, Paul Pennyfeather is oddly unsurprised to find himself qualifying for the position of schoolmaster at Llanabba Castle. His colleagues are an assortment of misfits, rascals, and fools, including Prendy and Captain Grimes, who is always in the soup (or just plain drunk). Then Sports Day arrives, and with it the delectable Margot Beste-Chetwynde, floating on a scented breeze. As the farce unfolds and the young run riot, no one is safe, least of all Paul.
