My name is Gary Rendell. I'm an astronaut. When they asked me as a kid what I wanted to be when I grew up, I said, "astronaut, please!" I dreamed astronaut, I worked astronaut, I studied astronaut. I got lucky; when a probe exploring the Oort Cloud found a strange alien rock and an international team of scientists was put together to go and look at it, I made the draw. I got even luckier. When disaster hit and our team was split up, scattered through the endless cold tunnels, I somehow survived. Now I'm lost, and alone, and scared, and there's something horrible in here. Lucky me.

On the forge world of Morod, the machines never stop and the work never ends. The population toils in the mines and factoria to protect humanity from the monsters in the void, while the Adeptus Mechanicus enjoy lives of palatial comfort. Genetor Gammat Triskellian seeks to end this stagnant corruption. When he learns of a twisted congregation operating within the shadows, one which believes that the tech-priests are keeping people from their true salvation, he sees in them an opportunity to bring down Morod's masters and reclaim the world in the name of progress.

Il y a plusieurs milliers d'années, la Terre a envoyé de nombreuses équipes dans l'espace en vue de terraformer de nouveaux mondes et de donner un futur à l'humanité. Arrivés à proximité d'une de ces planètes, les scientifiques à bord du vaisseau de terraformation baptisé l'Égéen découvrent, contre toute attente, qu'elle abrite déjà une forme de vie. Vont-ils surseoir à l'exécution de leur mission ou, envers et contre tout, rendre la planète habitable pour l'homme alors que la Terre n'a plus donné signe de vie depuis bien logntemps.

La Terre est au plus mal... Ses derniers habitants n'ont plus qu'un seul espoir : coloniser le "Monde de Kern", une planète lointaine, spécialement terraformée pour l'espèce humaine. Mais sur ce "monde vert" paradisiaque, tout ne s'est pas déroulé comme les scientifiques s'y attendaient. Une autre espèce que celle qui était prévue, aidée par un nanovirus, s'est parfaitement adaptée à ce nouvel environnement et elle n'a pas du tout l'intention de laisser sa place. Le choc de deux civilisations aussi différentes que possible.

Quarant’anni dopo la scomparsa degli Architetti, il più grande nemico alieno della galassia è tornato, e questa volta i manufatti che hanno preservato interi pianeti dalla distruzione risultano inefficaci. I mondi delle colonie umane rischiano l’estinzione. Alcuni credono che le alleanze con altre specie possano salvarli. Altri insistono che l’umanità debba combattere da sola. Ma nessuno ha né la capacità offensiva né la tecnologia sufficienti per garantire la vittoria. Nel frattempo, la minaccia degli Architetti si fa sempre più vicina.

Ottant’anni prima, la Terra venne distrutta da un nemico alieno. Molti fuggirono mentre altri, in milioni, morirono. L’umanità creò dei nuovi esseri umani potenziandoli come Idris, in modo che potessero comunicare tramite la mente con i loro aggressori. Poi questi “architetti” scomparvero improvvisamente, senza una ragione apparente, e Idris e la sua specie divennero obsoleti. Da quando hanno ricondizionato la sua mente durante la guerra, Idris non è né invecchiato né stanco.

Lee pensava di aver perso Mal, eppure ora è miracolosamente tornata. Ma cosa è successo quel giorno nella brughiera? E dov'è stata per tutto questo tempo?
