In January of 2015 I was asked to give three readings of my work at the University of Alabama Gadsden Center. At the first one I thanked the people who came to hear me, and told them I thought they had a right to know if I could write or not, right from the beginning. So I told them I would play them the audio version of "The Killing of Train-Man Brown", and that afterward, if anyone wanted to leave, there would be no hard feelings. No one left.

What can you do, what can you say, when your child becomes discouraged? I said nothing. I wrote this letter to her instead. Tell your child you care. That she's wonderful and special. Because...she is.
