Während der Sitzungen entwickelt sich allmählich ein vertrautes Verhältnis zwischen dem Ich-Erzähler und seinem Modell. Marie ist eine aufmerksame Beobachterin, und so hat sie vieles, was sich rund um das Haus des Malers abspielt, bemerkt. Eines Tages ist Marie verschwunden. Der Ich-Erzähler ist überzeugt davon, dass es einen Zusammenhang gibt zwischen ihrem Verschwinden und dem Gemälde "Die Ermordung des Commendatore".
