Captain Frederick Marryat (10 July 1792 - 9 August 1848) was a Royal Navy officer, a novelist, and an acquaintance of Charles Dickens. He is noted today as an early pioneer of nautical fiction, particularly for his semi-autobiographical novel "Mr Midshipman Easy" (1836). He is remembered also for his children's novel "The Children of the New Forest" (1847), and for a widely used system of maritime flag signalling known as Marryat's Code. One day Krantz comes home to witness his wife being unfaithful to him. In a fit of anger he kills both his wife and her lover, who is also Krantz’s lord. Krantz fears the punishment he will surely receive, so he flees with his three children. His safe haven is the Hartz Mountains. There he meets a beautiful young lady who he marries shortly after. Their marriage however does not go as expected. The bride’s night-outs raise Krantz’s suspicions.

In den verschneiten Berges des Harzes ist das Leben kein Zuckerschlecken. Gefahren drohen nicht allein von der Kälte und der Einsamkeit, sondern auch von den Wölfen, die sich zu Rudeln formieren und die verstreut wohnenden Menschen in Angst und Schrecken versetzen.
