Nachdem Admetos' Vater Pheres abgelehnt hat, für seinen Sohn zu sterben, erklärt sich seine Frau Alkestis bereit, diesen Schritt zu gehen. Bald bereut Admetos es, seine Frau gehen zu lassen.
