In het vierde deel van Victor Hugo's "De Ellendigen" wordt het verhaal voortgezet met de opkomst van de Junirevolutie in 1832 in Parijs. De revolutionairen en de koninklijke troepen strijden om de controle over de stad, terwijl Jean Valjean en zijn dochter Cosette proberen te ontsnappen aan de gevolgen van hun verleden. Ondertussen wordt het personage Marius verliefd op Cosette en sluit zich aan bij de revolutionairen. De levens van deze personages raken steeds meer verstrengeld in het turbulente Parijs van de 19e eeuw.
