"The Adventure of the Speckled Band" is the 8th of 12 stories collected in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. It was originally published in Strand Magazine in 1892. Doyle thought that this was his best Holmes story. In fact, he thought so much of it that he wrote and produced a play based on the story. The play, originally called "The Stonor Case," differed from the story in several details but was essentially the same.

Daphne Coleman, with her little Lab cross Naiad, is determined to prove her dog's worth in the Enterprise dog show and agility contest, which now allows mixed breeds to participate, thanks to the advocacy of dog show judge Sinopa Folds. Then murder strikes. The top contender, a beautiful Irish setter, is found dead of poison. Daphne is irate. Who would kill a dog? But before Daphne can find out, murder strikes again, and this time it's Judge Sinopa Folds.

Skyler discovers her growing reputation as a detective can work against her when she gets strong armed into a murder investigation by a hotel manager wanting to salvage his hotel's reputation. Months have passed since Skyler's last case but another guest drops dead, this time at an enormous gala in New York celebrating an upstart high tech company.

Bram Stoker created an incredible novel in Dracula. The success of the vampire novel unfortunately overshadowed most of his other writings. This volume contains nine of his best short stories, including the one in which the character of Dracula first appeared.
