gentle romance begins innocently enough in the stalls of a London theatre where Catherine is enjoying her ninth and Christopher his thirty-sixth visit to the same play. He is a magnificent young man with flame-coloured hair. She is the sweetest little thing in a hat. There is just one complication: Christopher is 25, while Catherine is just a little bit older. Sospeso fra l'atmosfera soffocante di Londra e i variopinti giardini della Provenza, "La fattoria dei gelsomini" prende le mosse da uno scandalo. Terry, la giovane figlia della rispettatissima lady Daisy, ha infatti avuto un'avventura con Andrew, scatenando le gelosie della moglie Rosie e, soprattutto, la perfidia di lady Belle, che non esiterà a ricorrere a un vile ricatto.

In un club della Londra anni Venti due signore inglesi scoprono di essere accomunate da una vita amorosa insoddisfacente, molto diversa da quella che avevano sognato il giorno del matrimonio. Mrs Wilkins, timida e repressa, è sposata con un avvocato ambizioso che "lodava la parsimonia tranne quando si trattava del cibo che finiva nel suo piatto"; Mrs Arbuthnot, estremamente religiosa, è sposata a uno scrittore di biografie sulle amanti dei re: per una donna come lei, una cosa davvero sconveniente.

L'autrice, riscoperta recentemente dalla letteratura di genere, non ha mai pubblicato, in vita, questo romanzo, che fu scoperto dall'editore fra le sue carte e pubblicato integralmente (anche se mancava il capitolo IV, del quale peraltro non si sente la mancanza). Perché il romanzo, che risale al 1901, non sia mai stato pubblicato dall'autrice, è ignoto: certamente il fatto che la protagonista si chiami Elizabeth, come in diverse altre sue opere, fa pensare a una certa ispirazione autobiografica, che può essere la causa della sua non pubblicazione.

Uno scandalo incombe sulla famiglia Bott: il povero Ernest, appena deceduto in un incidente stradale, ha diseredato la moglie Milly. Possibile che quegli occhi di colomba, quella figuretta tanto dolce e amabile meritino un castigo tanto duro? La costernazione e l'indignazione iniziale dei Bott si trasformano presto in dubbio e sospetto: e se quei venticinque anni di vita matrimoniale nascondessero un inconfessabile segreto? La soave Milly si è forse macchiata di qualche oscuro peccato?
