In today’s episode, we are joined by an individual that moved to Flagstaff, AZ as a young child and spent his early life connecting with friends and community in Flagstaff. Listen in as he describes those connections, his deep connection to his family, his experiences maneuvering a career as an artist, and the underlying worry that comes with his immigrant status. Our impression is that our guest and his focus on family has motivated him to create opportunities that he sometimes worries about being taken from him. His love for his family and connection to the community are cornerstones in his life.

In today’s episode, we are joined by Nely Esparza-Gutierrez. Nely moved to Flagstaff as a young child and had an early interest in pediatric medicine that has led her to a career in nursing. Nely describes her early life experiences that include some periods of isolation in the name of protection and the lingering fears and anxiety that manifest to this day as a result of uncertainty in immigration status.

Of note, Nely references the protests against government policy, specifically immigration policy, that occurred in mid-June with specific reference to the protests in Los Angeles. Additionally, Nely shares about sexual assault in the latter half of this episode. A valuable resource for individuals who have experienced sexual assault is Victim’s Witness and the contact information for that agency in Flagstaff is (928) 856-7676.

Listen in as she describes her early life connections to Flagstaff, her struggles with identity, including her immigrant history, the complexities in considering educational and career options, and the difficulties she and her family has faced in maneuvering the legal process in seeking documented status.

She references her family throughout the episode, including her brother and his name has been removed to protect their identity.
