“Does the science of reading include middle school?” –

    Tim Shanahan

    https://www.shanahanonliteracy.com/blog/does-the-science-of-reading-include-middle-school

    Teacher Question:

What does the science prioritize for middle level ELA instruction? Is there a point when teaching into a phonics gap for students does not have a payoff? With limited time in a middle school classroom, I am thinking about what needs to be prioritized.

    Stacey Klein and Max

Stacey Klein is a fierce parent advocate who took on Minnesota’s most affluent school district to fight for her son’s right to learn to read. Her son completed 3rd-grade with a Kindergarten reading level. Without her advocacy and intervention, he was on a trajectory to finish 12th-grade reading at a 4th-grade level. Stacey's family navigated years of delays, denials, a due process hearing, and federal lawsuits in the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, ultimately costing them $300,000 in educational and legal fees. Despite the district’s appeals, her son received all of his court-ordered services, worked hard, is now reading at grade level, and is on track to graduate with his peers. Today, Stacey relentlessly advocates for students with learning disabilities like dyslexia, committed to ensuring no family has tofight the same battle her family did to guarantee their child learns to read in school.

    The One About…

SRSD Plus Oral Language, Handwriting, and Spelling with Dr. Young Kim

Dr. Young-Suk Kim and SRSD founder, Dr. Karen Harris, developed an integrated approach for Kindergarten to Second Grade students that takes the well-regarded SRSD framework and strengthens the foundational skills for beginner writers. This fascinating work is groundbreaking, and the results are impressive!

    Young’s recommendation:

“When teaching reading and writing subskills, make the link between reading and writing explicit and visible. Explicitly point out how target skills and strategies can be used in reading and writing contexts.”

    Dr. Young Kim bio:

Young-Suk Grace Kim is a professor and the senior associate dean at the School of Education, University of California, Irvine. A former classroom teacher in San Francisco, Kim’s scholarship focuses on understanding language and literacy development and effective instruction for racially, ethnically, economically, and linguistically diverse children, and helping them build strong foundations to support their success in school and beyond. Her areas of research include reading comprehension, reading fluency, listening comprehension and oral language, dyslexia, higher-order cognitive skills, written composition, and reading–writing relations. She has worked extensively with monolingual children from various linguistic backgrounds (e.g., English, Korean, Chinese, Spanish, Kiswahili) and multilingual children in the United States. Her research has been supported by the Institute of Education Sciences, the U.S. Department of Education, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, and the National Science Foundation. She was a recipient of the 2012 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers by President Barack Obama.

Kim is currently serving as editor-in-chief for Scientific Studies of Reading and chair of the Vocabulary Special Interest Group for the American Educational Research Association.

    The One About…

Are we “Sold a Story” on Science of Reading Trade Books?

    Quote:

“Considering a key theme of ‘Sold a Story’ is the danger of following edu-gurus, I find it *very* interesting that a lot of the SoR crowd all seem to cite the same handful of folks-some of whom have very little expertise in the stuff they’re writing trade books about.” –

Trevor Aleo is a teacher, researcher, and consultant.

“As a full-time high school teacher and doctoral student, I find myself in a unique position -with one foot firmly planted in the classroom and the other in the world of research. One of things I’m most passionate about is making all of the incredible theories and scholarship out there more accessible and actionable for practitioners.”
