As Americans struggled over public health and personal freedom, the United States suffered more COVID deaths than during all its foreign wars, the largest employment loss since the Great Depression, and the greatest increase in national debt since the Second World War. No developed nation had a poorer record.

Understandably, Americans want to move on. The pandemic was too traumatic, its memories too painful.
