  • Dr. Moffat- The Ramotswe Family Doctor
    Dec 19 2023
Warmly welcome dear Mma Ramotswe lovers. In this episode we will meet Dr. Howard Moffat a very intersting person both in the books and in real life. Dr. Howard Moffat appears from time to time as a character in the The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency books. He is a real person and is an old friend of the author of the novel serie professor Alexander McCall Smith. And believe it or not Dr. Moffat is a relative of the legendary Dr. Livingstone. I belive its partly because of Dr. Moffat and his wife Fiona Moffat that the No1. Ladies Detective novell serie exists. They first introduced Alexander McCall Smith to Botswana in the 1980ties and that’s how he started to develop his love for the country and its people 🇧🇼. We also know that the main character Mma Ramotswe grow up in a village called Mochudi, thats the village where Dr. Moffat used to be the head of the local hospital and also treated Mma Ramotswe father Obed Ramotswe. Apparently there many things to talk with Dr. Moffat about and also to find out what is real and what is fiction. Was he for example the president of Botswanas medical doctor, did he play a mayor role in the fight against HIV / AIDS and did he sometimes preach in the Anglican Cathedral, is it for real or fiction? Who could know better then Dr. Moffat himself.

I’m pretty sure Mma Ramotswe would agree not only because they are from the same home village - Mochudi. Unity Dow is an internationally awarded democracy fighter, human rights activist, author of books, former high court judge, foreign minister and education minister and not to forget - a cattle farmer from Mochudi, just like Mma Ramotswe`s father Obed Ramotswe. Unity Dow gave this interview at the Botswana parliament on the 8th of March 2023, just before she had her International women’s day speech, in the parliament. No matter how busy she is, she takes time to talk about her beloved fictional friend Mma Ramotswe and her home country Botswana that is like a character in the novel serie. A country that now needs a lot of reforms according to Unity Dow. Something she is bravely fighting for. So welcome again dear listeners to hear Unity Dow sharing things like her passion for reading, the culture of Botswana and how the women’s role in the society has changed since we first heard about Mma Ramotswe in 1998.
