About this listen

World-renowned adventurer and broadcaster, Bear Grylls, presents some of the most incredible near-death experiences, told by those who lived to tell the tale. These extraordinary and diverse accounts of human bravery, mental and physical strength - and sometimes sheer luck - range from being stranded for more than 50 days at sea, to surviving world-changing acts of terrorism.

Bear contextualises each feat of endurance or bravery by relating them to his own experiences of near-misses and misfortune from his military career and survivalist adventures. Listeners will experience the firsthand retelling of acts of quick thinking and gruelling struggles of those who found themselves in some of the most extreme circumstances imaginable.

    May 2 2019

Lance Corporal Wayne Sharrocks was on patrol in Afghanistan in 2011 when, just a few paces in front, a soldier stepped on a pressure activated improvised bomb. Despite being thrown to the ground by the force of the deafening explosion both men miraculously survived. Wayne suffered shrapnel wounds to his face and shoulder, though it was mental scars of the event that would take longest to heal.

This series of short stories made my daily commute less of a chore. I loved how they were narrated by the actual survivor's, fascinating.

I enjoyed this series.

These are quite inspirational in places and every single one of them made me really think about just how resilient human beings can be. The fact that these are told straight through, I suspect by clever editing of interviews, by the people themselves makes it much more real. Each of them will likely touch most listeners in some way, whether it's the utter horror of what occurred such as actually being in the jaws of a bullhead shark, the sheer flukes of chance that can lead to survival or the devastating after-effects of the events. All of them are impressive stories in their own right that will likely live long in the memory.

The one that will stick with me personally the longest is the story of Aron Ralston, which although you may well have heard it before, is an amazing story of grit and fortitude when most of us would have folded through the loneliness and extremity of what the situation demanded of him to survive. To hear him talk about it is pretty much jaw-dropping stuff and somehow brought it to life in ways that even the well-made film of the events '127 Hours' could not.

Bear Grylls and the production team, almost exclusively let each person tell their own story completely with Bear providing his thoughts on it briefly afterwards. As admirable as his own achievements undoubtedly are this is wise and although they are using his name to 'sell' this the real stars are the individuals and their stories.

Very well worth the time to listen to this.

An amazing series of stories from the survivors of near death experiences. This particular set isn't a 'how to' on survival, it's more a study in to how psychologically strong these people are to have survived the aftermath of the initial experience. Totally inspirational.
