Summary

In the aftermath of the mysterious death of their lead singer, the young members of a now-legendary British acid folk band hole up at Wylding Hall, an ancient English country house with its own dark secrets. There they record Wylding Hall, the album that makes their reputation - but at a terrifying cost when Julian Blake, their new lead singer, disappears within the mansion and is never seen again.

Now, years later, the surviving musicians and their friends and lovers - including a psychic, a photographer, and the band's manager - meet with a young documentary filmmaker to tell their own versions of what happened during that summer. But whose story is the true one? And what really happened to Julian Blake?

Engrossing and atmospheric

Fleetwood Mac has made a spooky book. Evocative of ancient English countryside mixed with 70s rock and roll high times. Rushed ending.

Something a bit different, very enjoyable.

At first I wasn't sure I liked the format but I stuck with it and the different characters formed around a very clever way of telling the whole story. I found it very enjoyable, a bit predictable but none the worse for it, great description within the narrative built mind pictures of a gentle summer, carefree people and hidden depths to the tale.

Good supernatural mystery

This mystery holds the reader. Set in the 70's, it evokes the mood of the time & music scene well. The visual representation of the girl & the photos is spooky & well-written.

A slow burn

The story is told through a series of interviews with the stories characters. It took a while to get going but I enjoyed it nevertheless.

one irritation for me was the inclusion of several inaccuracies. BBC radio 3 & BBC 4 are digital channels that didn't launch until several years after the millennium, to name two of them. Only a Brit of above a certain she would realise this and perhaps be irritated by it.

I'll probably check out other works by the author.

Wylding Hall

Interesting style of, one sided interview, as in, you only hear the person answering, not any questions. Thankfully, voiced by different people, not one lone narrator.
If you’re looking for a short story, and something a little different, try this.

Promising but lacked substance

I enjoyed the mystery aspect of this book was disappointed it led nowhere. Many good books finish with an open end but it felt like there should have been another, meatier 3rd at the end of the book.

Spooky journey, but feels like a missed opportunity

A great ghost story but it doesn’t really go anywhere. I’d have liked to have known more about what happened and to have spent longer exploring the strange goings on at Wylding Hall. It all felt rather rushed and unfinished at the end which is such a shame as there are some great ideas in it.

Hippy dream or nightmarw

Folk horror at it's very best. Good story and yokel local phrases. Still haven't worked it out though
