About this listen
Author John Shirley turns his pen to the Wild West and the legendary Wyatt Earp! Wyatt in Wichita fuses historical fact with fiction, following the adventures of the young Wyatt Earp. Following the tragic loss of his first wife in the Missouri of 1870 in his early days on the dark side of the West, Wyatt eventually makes his way to Ellsworth and Wichita, where by confronting corruption he would eventually finally find his life’s work as a tough lawman. Could Wyatt Earp have known Billy the Kid when the kid was really just that? Could Wyatt have met up with Wild Bill Hickok in Deadwood? Using the sparse trails of historical evidence available to him, the lives of the famous and infamous intersect in Shirley’s novel, which revolves around Wyatt’s search for the murderer of an innocent young woman of Wichita. With Bat Masterson at his side, and bawdy girls about him in the smoky light of crowded saloons, Shirley explores the possible origins of the legendary figure who would forever remain synonymous with the Wild West. Stemming from a true passion and interest in one of the Wild West’s most indelible characters, Wyatt in Wichita is a thrilling read and an imagined glimpse into a seldom-seen side of Wyatt Earp and the untamed frontiers of early America.

Surprise find
I did not expect to enjoy this novel...cowboys have never figured in anything I have read before. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Simple straightforward storyline with believable characterisation.

A surprising story.
I was not prepared for what I went into. It gives a new picture of the man who would later be famed for slaying Billy The Kid, but would stand out by itself as a novel about the wild west and outlawland. Wyatt Earp is a complex, intriguing character in US history, and this paints a more varied picture of a man maybe more infamous than famous. The history of the Earp brothers is also interesting, and the narrator did a good job.
It doesn’t have a low story-wise, and it’s has its little nods to bigger things - Henry’s real identity, Wyatt’s fame, the Mafia.
I was positively surprised by this gem.

Simple honestly
I hope most of this was truthful but I did find it hard to believe that Wyatt knew wild bill , Billy the kid and Calamity Jane ? As such a massive country , other than than . He was an honest man along with his brother that stood strong for weaker persons alas hopefully our politicians will strive. To do the same 👍

Simple and relaxing
Not a hard listen, well narrated with a catchy and non challenging story that set up rose tinted thoughts of times gone by.

Really Rather Good
I didn't have high hopes for this one, possibly because it was in the Plus catalogue, but it unravels into a decent tale of wild west intrigue. Not overly brutal either, which makes a change form Larry McMurtry's obsession with torture. So, go on and listen. You won't be wasting your time.
