About this listen

Comprehensive overview of autism in females with lived experience accounts and latest research.

The difference that being female makes to the diagnosis, life and experiences of an autistic person is hugely significant. In this widely expanded second edition, Sarah Hendrickx combines the latest research with personal stories from girls and women on the autism spectrum to present a picture of their feelings, thoughts and experiences at each stage of their lives.

Outlining the likely impact will be for autistic women and girls throughout their lifespan, Hendrickx surveys everything from diagnosis, childhood, education, adolescence, friendships and sexuality, to employment, pregnancy, parenting, and aging.

With up-to-date content on masking, diagnosis later in life, and a new focus on trans and non-binary voices, as well as a deeper dive into specific health and wellbeing implications including menopause, PCOS, Hypermobility/Ehlers-Danlos, autistic burnout, and alexithymia, this is an invaluable companion for professionals, as well as a guiding light for women with autism to understand and interpret their own experience in context.

Really resonated with me. Helpful and reassuring, making sense of a lot of the things in my life that have puzzled me. Thanks.

So helpful

I did not expect to be described so fully. It's reassuring to be able to connect so many of my experiences to autism, since it lets me make sense of it. Very much a recommended read.

It's like the author has been a fly on the wall

As a postgrad I totally appreciate & value the relevance of referencing research to back-up & support points being made… but did anyone consider how in-line referencing constantly interrupting the audio version of this book could be an autistic person’s nightmare?? I got to chapter 5 and just had to stop because all I could hear was “Lie et al 2011” or “Livingstone 2017” etc etc etc… don’t get me wrong, it actually pains me to have to stop the book because I was really interested to hear the topics being covered & have no qualms with the narrator, but I felt like my head was going to explode as it was impossible to take in any of the actual points being discussed.

Please consider your audience! A supplementary PDF with chapter references would have been great. If we know autistic people struggle with being interrupted though, I have no idea why reading-out every in-line reference was considered a good idea.

Poor experience for autistic listeners (constant referencing)

So many ‘I do that!’ moments throughout this book. Full of information and resources, it’s also incredibly relatable and the wide spectrum of shares is fantastic. Chapters I thought weren’t for me, actually had really good info and I found they did relate.

Really good

As a complete newbie to the subject of ASD, I thought this might be a bit long and too much of a deep dive for me, but I found it a real ‘page turner’. It given me so much pause to reflect on myself, people I’ve known and still know, my family etc etc. I certainly feel in a much better position to meet my autistic great nephew when I eventually do with understanding and appreciation, and anyone else with ASD that I might meet. Excellent narration as well. Thank you

Such a helpful book
