About this listen

The long-awaited explosive climax to the first arc of the Number One New York Times bestselling Stormlight Archive.

Dalinar Kholin challenged the evil god Odium to a contest of champions with the future of Roshar on the line. The Knights Radiant have only ten days to prepare-and the sudden ascension of the crafty and ruthless Taravangian to take Odium's place has thrown everything into disarray.

Desperate fighting continues simultaneously worldwide-Adolin in Azimir, Sigzil and Venli at the Shattered Plains, and Jasnah at Thaylen City. The former assassin, Szeth, must cleanse his homeland of Shinovar from the dark influence of the Unmade. He is accompanied by Kaladin, who faces a new battle helping Szeth fight his own demons . . . and who must do the same for the insane Herald of the Almighty, Ishar.

At the same time, Shallan, Renarin, and Rlain work to unravel the mystery behind the Unmade Ba-Ado-Mishram and her involvement in the enslavement of the singer race and in the ancient Knights Radiants killing their spren. And Dalinar and Navani seek an edge against Odium's champion that can be found only in the Spiritual Realm, where memory and possibility combine in chaos. The fate of the entire Cosmere hangs in the balance.

What a Journey!

A spectacular conclusion to an epic story. Sanderson is a masterful story teller and cements himself at the summit of modern fantasy.

A bit of a slog really.

Still way ahead of most writers and only a 4 star on the Sanderson scale (5 by any other). Too much re-treading of old paths (yes, we know Shallan is a bit nutty in a handy sort of way). Definitely too much reliance on edge of knife situations (how come the heroes are too stupid to plan properly and have to rely on a deus ex machina in every battle...) - also, it's a bit of a cliché when the hero is practically dead, but has a life flashback and suddenly turns into superman. ALSO, audio only, the little quotes, purposely out of context, at the head of each chapter just get annoying. When reading, you can skip them, then plough back through them when you know what's going on, to see just how smart (and a bit smug) Mr Sanderson is. In the audio - just a distraction. Still, had to be read (listened to) and it's only my stinginess to blame (the whole audiobook for 1 credit is MUCH cheaper than buying a book or ebook). I think I still need to get the Kindle version, anyway, so that I can read it in a way I can enjoy it properly.

Wow! But......

I honestly think this one's going to need several re-listens to fully assimilate everything. I love almost everything about it, but at the same time it hasn't left me with the usual "Sanderlanche" emotions of shock & awe. lol
The stories of the characters are interwoven with brilliance & most get some kind of resolution, but sooooooo much is left for the next five novel story arc that it leaves you with a form of false belief that you've been totally left hanging. Considering there's going to be several years before the next Stormlight novel, it leaves you with very mixed feelings. I think this one's going to divide fans a little. Time will tell. still, absolutely required reading/ listening. 🙂

A brilliant mid-way point for the series

The perfect balance of tying up ends while allowing enough unsaid and unresolved to keep people engaged for when arc 2 begins in the future

Perfection

amazing end to this era of Stormlight Archive, the story is delivered in a really interesting way. Sanderson has outdone himself with his portrayal of truly interesting and complex characters, going to take some time to recover from this one

Brilliant!

I'm one of the hardcore fans, so very much subjective review.

I felt like the whole book was a Sanderlanche.
Very satisfying, though bittersweet end of the first arc. Can't wait for what comes next.

If you haven't already, please read Sunlit Man.

Beautiful

Again a masterpiece, I’ve loved it from start to finish. Now starts the waiting for part six, some ten years.
