About this listen
Explore the captivating life of William Wallace!
You might recognize him from Mel Gibson's film Braveheart.
Sir William Wallace (c. 1270–1305) was - and is - a Scottish national icon of the highest order. Born as the landless younger son of a minor nobleman (Sir Malcolm Wallace), his startling rise to become a military and historical legend, an exemplary patriot, and a national hero is an embodiment of the underdog narrative that many people identify with in film and real life.
Wallace earned a place in history for his successful efforts in leading the Scottish resistance forces who had been rallying against English rule since Scotland was conquered in 1296.
Some of the topics covered in this book include:
- Mysterious origins
- Coming of age in crisis
- Defiance and compliance
- The prophecy
- Uprising
- Love in a time of war
- The Battle of Stirling Bridge
- Invading England
- The guardian of Scotland
- Defeat at Falkirk
- An outlaw once more

interesting
So if you are looking for Brave heart, go elsewhere. If you want a very good look at his origins and the period, and all that is actually known about him, this is a great resource.

Good factual book terrible narration.
An interesting story ruined by a narrator who could not pronounce any of the place names correctly. This required frequent rewinding to try and work out where he was referring to. The Family names were also frequently mispronounced causing confusion. I almost gave up but, it was thankfully short.

Very pleased
I found this book, as all of the authors books, a very interesting. If the author has any weakness, in my opinion, it is the flat spots in his story telling. He gets bogged down in too much detail.

National hero
Our son is a dedicated fan of William Wallace so when we were in Scotland recently we visited Stirling Castle and this book brought the history of a common man who became a national hero.

Unusual pronunciation
Really if you are going to narrate things which relate to Scotland, you need to have enough connection with Scotland to understand how to pronounce names and places.

Rich detailed
Wallace is a perfect example of someone fighting for what is one of the most important parts of being a human being, freedom. Scots should keep the fighting up and stand up for their freedom.

Place names
The history is good and the story well written but as it’s an American reading it a lot of the place names are horrendously read! Berwick, Edinburgh, Jedburgh, Dunfermline, Roxburgh and a lot more. It’s just awful. All it would have taken is one conversation with a Scottish person to ask how to pronounce them! Totally cringeworthy at times!

Exactly what I needed
The William Wallace legend is so large that the man has been lost. The author has humanized Wallace and detailed the historical events in a very entertaining story. His characters create visceral responses and the story holds your attention.

Not only the life of nobility, royalty, and the leaders of Catholic and Anglican religions but especially that of the farmer, craftsman, and shopkeeper. The tale of William Wallace is not unfamiliar.
