About this listen

AS HEARD ON THE DIARY OF A CEO PODCAST

Calorie information is ubiquitous. On packaged food, restaurant menus and online recipes, we see authoritative numbers that tell us the calorie count of what we're about to consume. And we treat these numbers as gospel; counting, cutting, intermittently consuming and, if you believe some 'experts' out there, magically making them disappear. We all know, and governments advise, that losing weight is just a matter of burning more calories than we consume.

Here's the thing, however, that most people have no idea about. All of the calorie counts that you see everywhere today, are wrong.

In Why Calories Don't Count, Dr Giles Yeo, obesity researcher at Cambridge University, challenges the conventional model and demonstrates that all calories are not created equal. He addresses why popular diets succeed, at least in the short term, and why they ultimately fail, and what your environment has to do with your bodyweight.

Once you understand that calories don't count, you can begin to make different decisions about how you choose to eat, learning what you really need to be counting instead. Practical, science-based and full of illuminating anecdotes, this is the most entertaining dietary advice you'll ever come across.

Loved it it. Very useful and very well explained. Please persevere through the complexity of chapter 3. The rest is a delight.

Useful book

This book is just brings together ‘already known’ science together on this topic in one place. Far too detailed. If I want to know the history of the kilo calorie and how it was discovered, named and numerous associated calculations - I’ll look it up thanks. Title is deceiving, nothing new.

Boring

Some parts of the book were heavy going eg Krebs cycle, but Prof Yeo’s personality made this book a very enjoyable listen.
And it’s made me reevaluate many of my preconceptions!

Thoroughly engaging narrator!

a brilliant book, sometimes a bit technical, but please to hear more in than out makes you fat. very good explanation of how the body processes the food we eat, great book, although I still can't understand how poor people afford takeaways

This is one of the most informative and/or educational books that I have ever come across. This book is friendly for a doctor and a taxi driver (respect for both of the professional categories). It explains matters scientifically, socially and psychology. This is a masterpiece. Thank you Mr Yeo 🙏☺️

Remarkable

The book is quite scientific in parts and can be pretty hard going but i found it very interesting. Dr Giles Yeo is funny and witty and the information is delivered in a non preachy informative way. I was hooked and will listen to it again

Very interesting

This was a really helpful book as I navigate a lot of messaging and try to take back control of my diet plan. It is fascinating to know that all of the calorie counts that we see everywhere today, are wrong - and empowers you to make better decisions!

Love this audio guide

Dr. Yeo is a good writer, and explains in detail in a series of segmented chapters the history of the calorie, how energy is absorbed and used in your body, different diets and their effects on the body, and how to count calories properly and be healthier with eating. He does this with personal stories mixed in and a good sense of humor, keeping you entertained while teaching key concepts.

However, occasionally the book does dip into what for most people is pretty advanced biochemistry. Yeo does his best to break it down into understandable chunks, but it can be a struggle to understand occasionally - for one of the chapters I had to skip over a section that was a little too advanced and was going way over my head. Overall a good read and has given me greater understanding of how the body works and processes food.

Complex but informative

A decent breakdown of why the calories contained within a given food aren't necessarily the calories available. Well read by the author with a few "dad" jokes to keep the listen enjoyable.

Interesting look at caloric availability in foods
