Summary

Wealth, power, and privilege have always been a part of Levi Shephard’s life. However, it comes at a price. The darkness that surrounds being born into a family of organized crime has always kept him at a distance when it came to relationships. He only hooked up with women who understood the game and played along.

Born with a heart defect, Aspen Chance has been sheltered and raised by her religious grandmother. When her grandmother passes away, Aspen is left with no family - except her older sister who her grandmother had believed was headed straight for Hell.

Deep down Aspen hopes to reconnect with her sister while also being given the chance to experience more of life. Leaving the only home, she’d ever known behind she moves to Ocala, Florida to live with her sister. It doesn’t take her long to realize her sister was going to shelter her even more than her grandmother had.

One of the strippers that Levi enjoys occasional hook ups with is killed one night while a fight breaks out in the club. He might not have been able to prevent her death but he could save her younger sister. Aspen was everything her sister had claimed: young, naïve, and sheltered. When he realizes she’s also not well and has no one to protect her- he takes on the role.

What he swore was only a friendship in which he would make sure Aspen had everything she needed - he hadn’t expected her to end up sleeping in his bed due to her night terrors, or trusting him when it came to her health care and he sure as hell hadn’t been prepared when she wanted to experience pleasure. Meeting her needs takes on a whole new twisted meaning that he fears could destroy them both.

Incredible Story & Listen🎧 Captivating & Steamy!

Abbi Glines does it again and pens another winning novel set in her “Smoke” series, a southern mafia romance novel, one that captivates your attention and tugs at your heartstrings the entire time. I am loving this series and the fantastic and unique mafia world Glines created and as much as I would like to say the series keeps getting better and better, it would not be fair to the earlier books, which are just as amazing. This sixth book features Levi Shephard, the bad boy who does not do relationships and Aspen Chance, the fragile sister of Irish, aka Kitty, who works at the strip club, the “Devil’s Lair”, that Levi frequents. Aspen lived a sheltered life with her grandmother until her passing and then her sister took her in, who is also keeping her sheltered, especially from her life and the people she knows. Levi was at the club when a fight broke out, a gunfight and one of those shots hit Kitty, and Levi could not save her but knew her sister was home alone, so he went to make sure she was safe. I loved how everything played out in this book and it was great to watch Levi, who does not do “love” fall for Aspen. She brought out something in him, and not just his caring side, but a protective and possessive side, too, and she was the light of his darkness, and an angel to his devil and diabolical ways. And like the earlier books in the series, Glines’ writing, plot and world building are fantastic, as are the character growth and development. There is never a dull moment in this book and the story has the perfect balance of drama, angst, thrilling suspense, heartfelt emotions and steamy romance. Abbi Glines, thank you for another amazing story and wild ride.

🎧📚🎧 Sean Masters and Rose Dioro were incredible in bringing these characters and story to life. They understood the characters they were portraying, giving each a voice that was fitting and was believable in every role they performed. Masters nailed it as Levi, showcasing all aspects of his personality and demeanor, playing an overprotective, possessive alpha bad boy perfectly. Dioro was just as amazing in her role as Aspen, grasping every aspect of her personality as well, from her naivety to her strength and determination. Both were fantastic performing the roles of all the secondary characters, too. These entertaining storytellers made a fantastic narration team, with voices that complemented each other and a performance that elevated the already amazing story to another level. Thank you for another amazing listen!

What a dominant man - the story is just wow

Aspen Chance has just moved to live with her sister Irish after their grandmother passed away, as she has no other living relatives and has a serious heart condition, it was the right thing to do .

Her sister is the last person her grandmother would have wanted her to live with, she moved away to escape their strict upbringing and became a stripper with the stage name Kitty and working at the Devil’s Lair.

It was one night when her sister was at work that Aspen met Levi Shepard and he made one lasting impression on her. It was soon after that after her sister was murdered and very quickly Levi assumes the role of protector to Aspen as her sister’s assassin could start hunting her down. Goodness hearing this man's voice just brings this story to life, and how domineering he is.

Levi starts developing feelings for Aspen and there lies a huge problem. He has certain kinky ways that he thinks that someone as innocent as Aspen, who’s still a virgin, would not be able to fulfill.

She wants him, he thinks by staying away and getting his needs met elsewhere will save Aspen heartache, when in fact he is causing it! The story takes you through a few highs and lows but this is am amazing story and really does come alive hearing the characters, I cannot recommend it enough!

Super steamy

3.5 stars

This book was the escape I needed. This is a super steamy, age gap, opposites attract, mafia romance. It’s book 6 in the series but can be read as a standalone.

Like the other men in this series, Levi is possessive and overprotective, and in this case, it’s definitely warranted, as Sspen is sheltered and not used to his world. She brings out his softer, caring side. They both experience some growth in this story, which I always like to see.

The story brought back a character from the first couple of books, which I haven’t read yet, and I’m definitely going to be reading those to get the full backstory. I appreciated the fact that the author gave us enough insight into her backstory without spoiling the first two books in the series. We also got to see more (and a different side) of Kye than we have in previous books and I’m intrigued by his character. At times, I even liked him better than Levi. I love the found family aspect of this series and I loved how the other women embraced Aspen into the group so quickly.

I really enjoyed the narration. It was done in duet style which always provides a more immersive listening experience. Sean Masters is a new to me narrator and I really enjoyed his performance. I think he embodies the character of Levi really well and did a great job bringing out the personalities of the other male characters. This is the second audio I’ve heard narrated by Rose Dioro and she played the sweet, naïve, but strong-willed Aspen so well. Both narrators were fantastic in the steamy scenes. They really had me blushing.

Despite all the things I liked about this book, there were a few things that affected my enjoyment of this book. First thing was Levi’s obsession with Aspen’s v card. The other thing was the “other woman drama”. It’s not a trope I encounter very often, or feel strongly about, but in this case it rubbed me the wrong way.

All that being said, I enjoyed this book and will definitely be continuing the series. This is a good book if you’re looking for a quick steamy read with suspense and found family.
