Summary

#1 New York Times Bestseller

A Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine Book Club Pick

For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life - until the unthinkable happens.

Perfect for fans of Barbara Kingsolver and Celeste Ng, Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

A beautiful story, beautifully told.

A clever blending of past and present. I loved the story, the setting and the narrator's accent. Highly recommended!

If you liked To Kill a Mockingbird, you’ll like this

Thoroughly enjoyed this story and totally fell in love with the main character, feeling protective over her and feeling sick and anxious for her when she was in difficult situations (no spoilers). Only excellent books make you have physical reactions. Highly recommend.

Wonderful haunting story

I could not stop listening to this story. The narration was brilliant and it invoked so many emotions. I shall be finding other stories by this author. Still don’t know what grits are though!

Unforgettable

I'm always wary of books that get such high ratings, I hate being disappointed. This was no disappointment but a glorious tale, beautifully written and narrated perfectly. The best I've read/heard since Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver - another naturalist turned author. it will stay with me for a long time.

Just incredible. You must listen to this book.

I can enjoy a book without caring too much for any of the characters, and often do - but I really cared about Kaya.

Living the story...

Haven't enjoyed a book so much in a long time. I truly felt as though I was living it, loving it, experiencing it.

The narrator, Cassandra Campbell, was excellent. Very sensitive to the characters, she brought them alive.

Gorgeous

I absolutely loved this book if I could give it 10 stars I would, so sympathetically written and so beautifully read by Cassandra Campbell. I lived every second of the story with Kya, made me cry in parts and angry in others. I will read this book again and again I think it is absolutely gorgeous.
