"من اللافت للنظر أن الفترة من 1914-1945 من تاريخ الثقافة المصرية لم تشهد فقط قفزة جبارة في الكتابة الأدبية والتاريخية، بل وفي مختلف أنواع الفنون: المسرح، والسينما، والموسيقى، والغناء، والنحت. كما نلاحظ أنه في كل هذه الفروع، جمع المثقفون والفنانون المصريون بين احترامهم لتراثهم وبين تقديرهم للأساليب الجديدة في الثقافة والفنون الغربية؛ فأنتجوا أعمالًا جديرة بالبقاء، ولا تزال تخلب ألبابنا بجمالها حتى اليوم.

قارن كل ذلك بما يُنشر الآن لجيل من المثقفين وأساتذة الجامعات، قضوا في الغرب مُددًا أطول مما قضاه جيل ما بين الحربين، وحازوا من شهادات الغرب أكثر مما حازه ذلك الجيل، فإذا بهم إذا كتبوا كانوا أقل إبداعًا، وأقل فصاحة، وأضعف لغة، وأبعد عن العقلانية، وأقل ثقة بالنفس، وأشد ميلًا للمجاملة حتى لو تعارضت مع قول الحق. بالإضافة إلى تدهور في مستوى التعليم، وفي مصداقية الإعلام..."
