About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

The revolutionary new offering from Jordan B. Peterson, renowned psychologist and author of the global bestseller
12 Rules for Life

In We Who Wrestle with God, Jordan Peterson guides us through the ancient, foundational stories of the Western world, analyzing the Biblical accounts of rebellion, sacrifice, suffering and triumph that stabilize, inspire and unite us, culturally and psychologically. Adam and Eve and the eternal fall of mankind; the resentful and ultimately murderous war of Cain and Abel; the cataclysmic flood of Noah, the spectacular collapse of the Tower of Babel; Abraham’s terrible adventure, and the epic of Moses and the Israelites: What could such stories possibly mean? What force wrote and assembled them, over the long centuries? How did they bring our spirits and the world together, and point us in the same direction?

It is time for us to understand such things, scientifically and spiritually; to become conscious of the structure of our souls and our societies – to see ourselves and others as if for the first time.

Join Elijah as he discovers the Voice of God in the dictates of his own conscience, and Jonah, confronting hell itself, in the belly of the whale, because he failed to listen and act. Set yourself straight in intent, aim and purpose, as you begin to more deeply understand the structure of your society and your soul. Journey with Jordan Peterson through the greatest stories ever told.

Dare to wrestle with God.

Critic reviews

Whether in your eyes the author ranks as prophet or provocateur, you should read this outstanding study … there is rich substance underlying it (Rupert Shortt)
[A] brilliant new book (Tim Stanley)
Engrossing rewarding … Jordan Peterson wrestles with God and the result is one for the ages … the reader is encouraged to buckle down and choose his or her own adventure (Nina Power)
At a time when so many of the mainstream Christian churches are either drifting along with the culture or turning inward to bicker about who has power, it is perhaps not surprising that the most compelling interpretation of the Scriptures is coming from a layman, a psychologist, someone outside the ecclesiastical structures. Jordan Peterson makes no claim to give an adequate theological account of the Bible, but he is indeed shedding light on what the Church Fathers called the ‘moral sense’ of the sacred text. It is practically impossible to imagine anyone who would not find illumination and inspiration in the pages of this book (Bishop Robert Barron, founder of Word on Fire)
This book revitalizes ancient wisdom and builds a bridge between human biology and theology—a bridge we must cross to rescue ourselves and our civilization from the biblical errors now visible on every horizon (Bret Weinstein, cohost of DarkHorse Podcast and coauthor of A Hunter-Gatherer’s Guide to the 21st Century )
Jordan Peterson has wrestled into existence another iconic masterpiece, highlighting that our ancient stories filter what we see and create our perception of reality. Read on to understand the provocative arguments of our age at an entirely new level (Mehmet Oz, Professor Emeritus at Columbia University)
Peterson breathes psychological fire into ancient mythological motifs, and he proposes a new understanding of spirit that bridges religion and science. This book will help many people recover the roots of their spirituality while orienting them to a new expression of that spirituality (John Vervaeke, author of Awakening from the Meaning Crisis )
Peterson asks the questions of our time. Who are we? How did we get here? How do we meet the challenges of the future, both as individuals and as a civilization? A must read from the West’s most important public intellectual (Konstantin Kisin, cohost of the TRIGGERnometry podcast)

No easy listen but life changing. Long but, what could out priorize a book so important.

This book is a brilliant indication of the correlation between christianity and society. The author presents ideas that are thought provoking and compelling. The links drawn between scripture and the social mores of society are so interesting. I enjoyed every moment of it.

Thought provoking, brilliant

It is comprehensive in it's exploration of the old testament, it interprets it's meanings alongside some other icons of literature or other world religions, but it's a little one sided to those texts he parallels...

it's great, but not always easy to follow when distracted... on the move, etc. The subject matter took me a while to be interested in (I am not a biblical scholar).

A tour de force interpretation of the first few books of OT in relation to ethics, morals, etc...

Unfortunately not the best audio.
Loved the book.. like most of Jordan’s books, it’s easier to understand in silence and not with a full focus.

If you like Jordan you’ll like this ;)

We Who Wrestle With God is a profoundly insightful exploration of faith, meaning, and the human condition. Peterson’s thoughtful reflections and deep psychological analysis offer a fresh perspective on spirituality, making complex ideas accessible and relatable. I found it incredibly helpful on my own journey of faith, as it challenged me to confront deeper questions while offering guidance and clarity. This book is a must-read for anyone seeking to better understand the intersection of belief, struggle, and personal growth.

Wonderfully Insightful

The author's understanding of the old testament was extremely interesting, making sense of the deeply symbolic nature of the stories and weaving it all into a fascinating narative

A thorough and insightful analysis of the old testament stories

If you have the strength of heart and the moral courage to listen to the whole of this book, you will be greatly encouraged. Dr Peterson's masterful analysis of these ancient texts was highly illuminating. Even though I have been reading these texts continuously for more than 25 years, I learned valuable, practical insights that encourage me to strive upwardly and to sacrifice and bear my cross daily. I would highly recommend it to those who are humble and open-minded enough to receive the gems it contains.

Although the audio quality isn't excellent at the beginning, it gets much better, and Dr Peterson's passion and inimical voice drive his lessons home in a powerful way.

Thank you so much, Dr Peterson, for sharing your genius with the world so unreservedly, and for faithfully embodying the message you share.

A Masterpiece

I likes the book, although Jordan uses a lot of fancy words which I didn’t know the meaning of. However the reading was good overall. A book worth listening to.
