Summary

From S. E. Smith, New York Times and USA Today best-selling author, comes this emotionally charged coming-of-age story filled with action, adventure, and suspense for listeners of all ages.

An act of defiance will either kill her or change her life forever.

Sixteen-year-old Makayla Summerlin enjoyed one thing in her crazy, messed-up existence: hanging with her friends at school. But her life is uprooted when she suddenly finds herself forced to live with a grandfather she barely remembers. One act of defiance will change her life forever. Having trouble adjusting to her new home, she sets sail in her grandfather's old sailboat. On a journey that will challenge everything she has ever believed about herself, Makayla must overcome her fears if she, and a surprising stowaway, are to survive.

A lovely story.

I enjoyed listening to this audible, it was a pleasant story in the beginning and exciting when it was just past half way & the ending very touching.

A Mixed Bag at Sea

"Voyage of the Defiance" starts with an interesting setup - teenager Makayla moves in with her grandfather to escape her mums drug problems, but then steals his sailboat when things get tough. Cool idea, shame about the delivery.
The biggest problem is the narration. Suzanne Elise Freeman reads everything in such a flat way that it's hard to care about what's happening. It's like having your GPS read you a story.
The actual story has issues too. Makayla keeps flip-flopping about what she wants - one minute she's happy to be away from her mums dangerous life, next she's running away because a boy she barely knows is going to college. It doesn't make much sense. The sailing part (which should be the main event) barely shows up until the very end.
The author tries to include diversity with Tyrell's character, but handles it pretty badly with lines like "Ten points for the black guy with a brain" from Makayla and Tyrell repeatedly saying things about "crazy white girls." It feels more like awkward stereotypes than real people.
If you're just looking for a basic teen adventure story and don't mind waiting a while for the action to start, you might enjoy this. But there are better options out there.

gripping, poignant

I loved this book, and once started wqs so reluctant to stop it, full of emotion, learning how to survive, pushing the boundaries and facing fears.
A journey of two young people so different but found a connection.
I cant recomend this book enough, please read/listen to it.

Disappointing

I was waiting all the way through the book for Tyrell and our heroine to get together for a hea ending. But, nothing. Not even a kiss and a very disappointing end. Br

Disappointed

The story had promise but fell short with no consequences actioned. Her mums boyfriend- nothing came of it. Anything interesting was just mentioned in passing- like the old man teaching her to sail. Boring story- not my cup of tea & definitely not a thriller.
