Summary
*THE TOP-TEN BESTSELLER*
From the New York Times bestselling author of Sorcery of Thorns and An Enchantment of Ravens comes a thrilling new YA fantasy about a teen girl with mythic abilities. This is the perfect listen for fans of Cassandra Clare, Sarah J. Maas's A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES series, and Holly Black!
Artemisia is training to be a Gray Sister, tasked with cleansing the bodies of the dead so that their souls can pass on; otherwise, they will rise as spirits with a hunger for the living.
When her convent is attacked, Artemisia defends it by awakening a revenant. Wielding this ancient spirit’s extraordinary power almost consumes her–but only a vespertine, a priestess trained to wield a revenant, has any chance of saving Loraille.
As Artemisia unravels a sinister mystery of saints, secrets and dark magic, her bond with the revenant grows. And when a hidden evil begins to surface, she discovers that facing this enemy may require her to betray everything she’s been taught to believe–if the revenant doesn’t betray her first.

Interesting concept
Saw some bits coming, others threw me completely. Very entertaining. :D This is the third book I've read from this author. I'll be watching for her next works.

The Revenant!!
Artemisia isn’t like any other character I’ve read about before, I found myself wanting to know every little thing about her.
I love that she isn’t your typical heroine, she’s scarred, flawed, questions her judgement and doubts herself. That made me love her so deeply.
The Revenant is one of the best written characters ever, nothing can convince me otherwise!! I found myself longing to hear from them.
And of course no Margaret Rogerson story would be complete without the incredible side characters. I loved them all.
This story gripped me. It was eerie at times. It wasn’t at all what I was expecting and I absolutely love that.
The audio was fantastic, definitely a book I’d reread.
𝑸𝒖𝒐𝒕𝒆𝒔 𝑰 𝒂𝒅𝒐𝒓𝒆𝒅: “I wished I were better at speaking. All those thoughts were in my head, but I didn’t know how to get them out.”
“The mere idea of having that conversation made me want to crawl into a hole and die.”
“You treat that beast better than you do yourself,' it commented sourly, watching Priestbane nose through the pile.
'He's a good horse. He carried me all day. He doesn't deserve to suffer because of the things I ask him to do.'
'Have you ever considered that your body carries you?”
“If there’s one thing I can always rely upon, it’s the reassuring dependability of human idiocy.”

Another excellent read from Margaret Rogerson
I love that the main character is an atypical heroine, in a new way for me. She isn’t mortally grey & her self-doubt isn’t self-indulgent. This magic system is interesting & different, in that magic comes from channeling the powers of the dead & only those who develops “sight” can. Those who have the sight are also the only one susceptible to possession, though all can fall victim to a sickness called blight that is caught from contact with spirits, and because of this any with the sight are sent to nunneries or monasteries, either becoming nuns, priests, or soldiers.
This book was well written, well paced & interesting without being too deep or too shallow.

Amazing characters and worldbuilding
I found the main character's demeanour very relatable, as she has childhood trauma that seems to manifest itself as autistic, socially anxious, or aromantic traits. The friendships she does eventually form over the course of the story are all extremely interesting and endearing also. Even her interactions with the villains throughout are thoughtful and nuanced.
The 'twist' in the final act was extremely well set up. One of those ones that you can almost see coming, but not quite make out the details, and then it all snaps clarity and your whole perspective on the setting and the characters shifts.
I'm glad it has a relatively happy ending, and it works as a standalone story... though it could easily yearn for a whole series of sequels.

Had potential but didn’t deliver.
This plot had some potential. Girl saves the world and for once didn’t need a man to do it. That’s the only real plus point to it all. It was hard to understand what was going on at the start as the whole idea of saints, relics and revenants wasn’t explained very well and there were points in the book where I really did think “what is going on now”.
The plot really stumbled along at a snails pace and the ending was massively anticlimactic leaving me wondering what the entire point of the novel had been.
The narration is robotic and monotone and didn’t draw you in to the story at all. American narrators can be very monotone in general but this sounded like a bot was reading the story and in places it was like the narrator’s voice had been sped up or edited in some way.
