Onsdag den 1. februar 1989 kl. 10.16 blev der fundet et stærkt mishandlet lig af en midaldrende mand drivende i vandet i Øresund umiddelbart udenfor den nordlige mole til Rungsted Havn. Liget bar tydelige præg af at have været udsat for stump vold i live.
Efterforskningen afdækkede en personjagt og gidselaffære samt en mishandling af et menneske, der af en professor i retsmedicin blev beskrevet som tortur.
Dræbte havde begået et simpelt tyveri, som hos bestjålne udløste en hævnfølelse og et raseri, der klart viser, at virkeligheden overgår fantasien.
