Horace Manning, scientist, recluse and 'closed book' even to his friends, is found dead in his study at 4a.m., following a dinner in honour of his daughter's engagement. An ivory-handled carving knife rests between his shoulder blades as the houseguests gather round to witness the awful crime. The telephone line has been sabotaged - a calculated murder has been committed. Rewinding twelve hours, the events of the afternoon and evening unfold, revealing a multitude of clues and motives from a closed cast of suspects until the narrative reaches 4a.m. again - then races on to its riveting conclusion at 4p.m. as the listener is led twice round the clock. First published in 1935, the sole novel from the actor and dancer Billie Houston is a lively country house mystery and a true lost gem of the Golden Age of crime writing.

Rattling melodrama
Apart from the "twice round the clock" structural gimmick (the sort of thing I love any time), the story is unabashedly melodramatic. I'm not giving away any spoilers when I say it includes a creepy scientist, a secret formula, a raging storm, sleepwalking, death by booby-trap, and various romantic entanglements. The tale rattles along brilliantly with excellent narration. If you're in the mood for this kind of entertainment, you'll enjoy it immensely.

Enjoyable Golden Age Mystery
Interesting crime and characters. I enjoyed the writing style from an age when style was important.

Really enjoyed
Well worth a credit. One of the better recent books from the British crime library. Apparently this author only wrote one book, which is a pity.

Best Reader Ever, Perfect Reader For This Perfect Book
I congratulate Soundings' sound choice of this pukka sahib of a reader who transform this book from dead print to living words. In this life there are, sadly, losers whom, having no music or poetry in their soul, seek to revenge themselves on art, let us not adhere to their barking for they no bite just spite

Worst reader I've ever heard
I can't realty comment on the merits of the story, because the narration is so appallingly bad. The victim sounds like the evil villain from a children's cartoon, and most of the other characters sound like posh clowns.
