About this listen

Phil Tufnell, aka 'Tuffers', is the much-loved English cricketer from the 1990s who has now become one of this country's favourite broadcasters. Not cast from the same mould as other players of his generation, Tufnell became a cult figure for his unorthodox approach to the game...and to life in general.

'Tuffers' Cricket Tales' is a deliciously eccentric collection of the great man's favourite cricket stories that will amuse and inform in equal measure. Tufnell's unmistakably distinctive voice, as heard to such good effect on 'Test Match Special', steers fans through dozens and dozens of terrifically entertaining and insightful anecdotes, garnered from his 25-year playing and broadcasting career. He introduces a cast of genuinely colourful characters found in dressing-rooms and commentary boxes from around the world, and in the process offers a uniquely warm and quirky homage to his sport.

A perfect Father's Day gift for all cricket fans.

Tuffers is a great story teller and has a lot of stories to tell. One of the most fun, honest and touching audio books out there.

As you would expect from a man like Tuffers, this is pretty entertaining stuff, as long as you keep your expectations low. The cricketing stories are pretty repetitive, either along the lines of "I got drunk and turned up late to the match" or " I lost my temper and called the umpire / coach / fellow player / Mike Gatting an idiot". Despite the self-effacing "what was I like?" attitude, he comes across as a difficult character with a chip on his shoulder, something which the mature Tuffers freely admits. Despite the occasional insight, I'd prefer something a bit more analytical and less repetitive. A proper biography, probably.

The later, showbiz stories are a bit dull.

As for the man's performance, his hesitant, slightly wooden reading is offset by this occasional hilarious accents, especially his ripe, entertaining South African. Oh, and the bleeping of the swear words is a total insult. The book loses a point - from 4 stars to 3 - just for that.

An entertaining listen but I'd rather have a biog.

A fabulous insight into Phil’s world during his cricket career. Written with great humour, and narrated by the cheeky chappie himself which gives it more weight than the others.

It was fun

Brilliantly read by Tuffers full of fun warts and all. A bit over Crickety but I certainly learned things about the game I hadn't known before. Engaging listen and was never bored.

Good fun

Some great tales about Tuffers offering some interesting and funny insight into behind scenes for all aspects of his life (including maybe a bit too much on celebrity times for pure cricket lovers). However, the delivery of the content was a bit unorganised as it wasn't chronological and felt like just randomly selected pieces which sometimes didn't fit in to the actual story.

Funny and interesting, but a bit unorganised
