About this listen

Welcome to Tremontaine, where ambition, love affairs, and rivalries dance with deadly results. In this novel Ellen Kushner and a team of writers return listeners to the world of scandal and swordplay introduced in her cult-classic novel Swordspoint. Listeners familiar with the series will find a welcome homecoming while new fans will learn what makes Riverside a place they will want to visit again and again.

Tremontaine follows Diane, Duchess Tremontaine, whose beauty is matched only by her cunning; Rafe Fenton, a handsome young scholar with more passion than sense; Ixkaab Balam, a tradeswoman from afar with skill for swords and secrets; and Micah, a gentle genius whose discoveries herald revolution. Sparks fly as these four lives intersect in a world where politics is everything, and outcasts are the tastemakers. Tread carefully, dear listener, and keep your wit as sharp as your steel.

Originally presented in serial form by Serial Box Publishing, Tremontaine is brought to you by Ellen Kushner, Joel Derfner, Racheline Maltese, Paul Witcover, Tessa Gratton, and Karen Lord.

Critic reviews

"Lovers of costume dramas and soap operas will find a lot to enjoy in this one. Did I mention that virtually every character in this serial is queer? Did I mention the strong narrative focus on chocolate?" (USA Today)

"A wildly lush, queer, gorgeous fantasy told in a serialized format." (Gay YA)

Not a patch on S1

I really enjoyed Ellen Kushner's other books, and listened to Tremontaine S1 on the strength of that - and it was excellent. As S2 for some reason wasn't available (although annoyingly I see it has now appeared - why do it out of order?) I went on to S3 hoping I could pick up the trail ... that wasn't a problem, but the plot was. As in there doesn't seem to be much of one and it has turned into an excuse for a lot of soft porn instead. I haven't manged to finish it as I've simply lost interest - a shame as it was a promising start in S1 and the narration is the same excellent standard.
