Den fortæller historien om en fantastisk og farlig ekspedition i det smukke, men ufremkommelige ishav og om det sammenhold og planlægning, der skulle til for, at ekspeditionen endte i succes og ikke katastrofe. Den danske forfatter Ole Bang blev født i 1917. Han stod bag en lang række bøger om store danskere og har blandt andet skrevet om H.C. Ørsted og Fridtjof Nansen.
