I had quite high hopes of an engaging story, given the description of the author and his achievements, unfortunately I was disappointed.
The way it was written was exactly what I was expecting from a Russian author, rather wordy and with lots of flowery language, however I didn't enjoy the story where a group of men in Florence trick their 'friend' into thinking that he had been 'transformed' into someone else. Personally I regard their actions as more like gaslighting and humiliating the victim and I found the idea of these rather unpleasant people laughing at their 'friend's' discomfort rather nauseating. I suppose that the one thing that it does show is that the practice of 'pranking' or as I prefer to call it 'humiliating' people hasn't changed all that much in several centuries.
The saving grace of this audio book is the narration, which I thought was very well done

The author might have been nominated for the Nobel prize for literature ten times, but even the quality of the text could not make this silly story of a Florence wood worker tricked into believing he was someone else anything more than a cruel prank perpetrated by unpleasant, selfish men calling themselves friends. Nasty.
