About this listen

Two brutal murders, a menacing band of poachers, and a fearsome creature on the loose in the mountains plunge Mattie Cobb and her K-9 partner Robo into a sinister vortex.

An explosion outside a community dance sends Mattie Cobb and Cole Walker reeling into the night, where they discover a burning van and beside it the body of outfitter Nate Fletcher. But the explosion didn’t kill Nate - it was two gunshots to the heart.

The investigation leads them to the home of rancher Doyle Redman, whose daughter is Nate’s widow, and the object of one of their suspect’s affection. But before they can make an arrest, they receive an emergency call from a man who’s been shot in the mountains. Mattie and Robo rush to the scene, only to be confronted by the ominous growl of a wild predator.

As new players emerge on the scene, Mattie begins to understand the true danger that’s enveloping Timber Creek. They journey into the cold, misty mountains to track the animal - but discover something even more deadly in Tracking Game, the fifth installment in Margaret Mizushima’s Timber Creek K-9 mysteries.

All 5 books

I have listened to all 5 books and have enjoyed everyone of them. Love the narrative, the characters and especially the dogs

Another great installment

Another fab read in the Timber Creek K9 Mystery series. I listen to this on Audible and the narration is awesome and the story gripping. It picks up about a month after the previous book finishes and takes you on a new adventure with Robo the GSD and Mattie using their skills to find the murderers.

My only dislike is the now 3rd instance in the books (the other 2 in preceding books) where suddenly dog behaviour advice pops in! It always feels a bit odd at the insertion of this info as Mattie is working Robo. But the behaviour tips are also so wrong and based on the completely debunked by science of the dominance/alpha theory - you as the human do not need to be the alpha, nor go through a door first, neither is a high drive dog trying to dominate you.

But aside from that which has me going FFS it is a cracking book and the next one is ready for listening to!

Keep track of a good book

I enjoyed this book. This author knows how to write a story with heart and will have you wishing for a happy ending for all the characters involved. This is book five in the series and i think it works best as part of a series, especially with everything the author puts her characters through. Mattie as an abuse victim has a hard time trusting people, leading to a lot of home life drama, as she struggles not to get close to the the local vet Cole Walker and his adorable children. It's also hard because he is the one the police turn to for help with cases. I normally don't like a lot of romance and wish the author would get back to the mystery, the reason I am listening to a book in the first place but that is not the case with this book. Cole's family make the stories more entertaining and along with Robo are a big reason I keep returning to the series. The mystery was a sad affair, with an illness and illegal big game hunting and trafficking. Story where nobody wins. I look forward to the next book and a happier story.
When a van explodes hurting a friend of Cole's in the process, Mattie doesn't expect to be caught up in a murder investigation. The van driver didn't die because of the van exploding instead it is discover he was shot. Before they can discover much the police get a phone call asking for help in the woods from a gunshot victim. Mattie and her K9 partner Robo go looking for him, only to find him already dead and the fact that they are not alone in the woods. Are the two deaths connected? And what about the big cat prowling around in the woods? Evidence has Mattie and Cole to leading a team into the woods to find a killer and a predator of the two legged kind.
I like the narrator. She makes the story entertaining and tense with just the sound of her voice.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

I love the characters in these books and the developing relationship between Mattie and Cole and between Mattie and her dog, Robo. The narrator is good, too

Great addition to the series

I am so loving this series and now I really am getting into the narration style. The characters are getting so developed and along with their relationships. Wouldn't like to live in Timber Creek though it seems so full of crime.

But what a plot, makes sense and then makes sense of the title.

Easy listen

Entertaining, listen, and a good series, but at times, I just wanted to shake the lead character.

I have enjoyed the 1st 5 books and found them enjoyable for their detail and background story. Starting to worry about Timber Creek though!

Another solid mystery / adventure for Robo

I am really enjoying this book series, I love the characters and their relationships. I really like Mattie and Robo. I'm not going to lie, I was hoping this was going to be more of a Big Foot searching mystery. Or a David Paulines 411 mystery. But sadly no. it's still good but I think it could of been a lot more interesting and fun. I really like Margaret Mizushima's writing, but it is quite gloomy and only really picks up when Robo or the children are involved. And some of the subject matter is a bit depressing. This isn't a cozy mystery series, but it could do with a bit more lightheartedness. I think you need to be able to strike the right amount of sadness with fun and quirky. I haven't had a laugh out loud moment with this series, but others I have listened to have had that sweet spot of levity and misery. Nancy Wu's performance is wonderful as always. The story is interesting, but again I'm going to be honest I was getting a bit fed up with Mattie and her attitude towards Cole. It was getting old really fast. I was expecting them to be together now and spending time with the girls. I want to see Mattie doing things like hikes and playing games with the girls. Going on adventures and finding treasures. The children have been through enough and frankly the area could do with a mystery that doesn't evolve around a murder. Maybe there should be a 411 style mystery or someone going missing or strange lights in the forest. I would like Margaret Mizushima to mix it up a bit.
