About this listen

From the Sunday Times Number One bestselling author of A Discovery of Witches, now a major Sky TV series, a novel about what it takes to become a vampire.

From human to vampire ...

Marcus Whitmore was made a vampire in the eighteenth century. Over two hundred years later, he finds himself in love with Phoebe Taylor, a human who decides to become a vampire herself.

But her transformation will prove as challenging now as it was for Marcus when he first encountered Matthew de Clermont, his sire.

While Phoebe is secreted away, Marcus relives his own journey from the battlefields of the American Revolutionary War, through the treachery of the French Revolution to a bloody finale in New Orleans. His belief in liberty, equality and brotherhood challenged at every stage by the patriarchy of the de Clermonts.

What will he and Phoebe discover in one another when they are finally reunited at Les Revenants, beneath the watchful gaze of Matthew and his wife, Diana Bishop?

Sunday Times Number One bestselling author Deborah Harkness returns to the spellbinding world she created in A Discovery of Witches and, through the prism of an unconventional love story, explores the power of tradition and the endless possibilities for change.

Critic reviews

What a rich, thrilling and educational tale it is... A captivating and romantic ripping yarn (E L James)
This is a glorious, finely-wrought gem of a book: intelligent, thoughtful, intricate... I could lose myself in here and never want to come out: what better accolade can there be? ...Utterly enchanting on every level (Manda Scott)

No plot twist, not enough gluing it together.
Disappointing after her trilogy, which was a firm favourite.

Lacked something essential for me.

I love the All Souls trilogy and have listened to the stories more than once. I finally got around to Time’s Convert and I wish I hadn’t bothered. It’s an okay book and would undoubtedly have been better if the previous narrator had read this story too. Pretty much my only criticism of Audible is frequent lack of continuity of narrator in a series of books. Does this book add anything to the trilogy? Not in my opinion. It feels like Deborah Harkness decided to squeeze out another book to cash in on the success of the trilogy, which is disappointing. When listening to the trilogy, I looked forward to switching on the story each day. With Time’s Convert, I was checking how much was left each day. Definitely not her best. Sometimes you have to finish on a high note and accept that a series has run its course.

Should have left it as a trilogy.

For fans of All Souls Trilogy this follows on the story one year on. There are three main story lines 1) the life and trails associated with raising two special children in the Bishop - Clairmont house (my favourite as it’s quite funny!). 2) Historic flashbacks to Marcus’ human life and meeting Matthew, fabulous American history. And 3) Phoebe’s journey of change from a human to vampire. The performance by Saskia Maarleveld, isn’t great, she speaks very quickly (so much so that you can change the speed slightly slower and it still makes sense!) and her accents are poor...(sorry)!

Sadly the performance lets this down

it was ok but I didn't think it was as good as discovery of witches. the story teller had different voices which I found hard. why not use the original narrater.

Ok

enjoyed the story

A change in narrator from the first 3 books was initially jarring and there was a noticeable difference at times. The story of Marcus and development of Matthew and Diana’s stories dovetailed nicely. Well worth listening to and now eagerly awaiting the next instalment where we hopefully watch the children grow (both vampire and little weaver-vamp toddlers).

A worthwhile extension to the storytelling

Ive stopped mid way twice as I’m struggling to stay focused, I really wish it had been narrated by Jennifer Ikeda like the previous books I feel it’s important to keep The continuity when it’s the same characters . I don’t want to give up as I adore this collection of stories. Had it been another author I would have stopped already , I will wait a few weeks and try again but Jennifer was incredible in her delivery of the other three books a hard act to follow.... I’m just finding myself easily distracted, the narrator isn’t holding my attention sorry 😞

Struggling .......

Good story and great to hear more about the other characters. Unfortunately the change in narrator lets the story down. The mispronunciation of names (eg Marthe) and several other words is distracting. The voice/accents are obviously now different, again distracting and disappointing after the outstanding performances by the narrator of the previous three books.

Inferior narration, good story.

I haven’t listened to the whole book because I can’t get onboard with the new reader... I’ve loved the all souls trilogy novels and audio books. I loved reading Times Convert but I do not like listening to it. The french speaking parts are worse. Very grating. Very Jodie Foster in Silence of the Lambs

Why has the narrator changed?
