About this listen
An old house + A new computer program = The travel opportunity of a lifetime...to another century.
Abby Thomas is spending the summer in a run-down old house with a bratty pre-teen named Merrideth she is supposed to tutor. Not a dream job. But it does come with perks.
There's John Roberts, a devastatingly attractive neighbor who is almost too wonderful to be real.
And there's the new computer program Beautiful Houses--also too amazing to be real. No one knows how it works, but with it she can rewind and fast-forward the lives of all the people who ever lived in the house, including Charlotte Miles.
In 1858, the house is a train stop on the Alton & Chicago Line. And Charlotte is stuck there serving meals to the passengers, wondering if she'll ever get to have any fun. And then she meets two travelers who change her life forever.
There's James McGuire with whom she falls in love. And there's his boss, a young Springfield lawyer named Abraham Lincoln. His debate with political opponent Stephen Douglas catapults him onto the national stage. And it inspires Charlotte to take up the cause of abolition.
The House
A stop on the Alton & Chicago Line. A stop on the Underground Railroad.
Watching the house's history unfold, Abby and Merrideth gain a new perspective on their own lives as time and again they see God's loving hand in the lives of its inhabitants.
©2013 Deborah Heal (P)2014 Deborah HealThere is a heavily Christian message running throughout, also: all things occurs for a reason, by God's will and through his love - nice sentiments but, for this reader, just a little too trite and heavy handed. Having said that, the story was enjoyable, and made much more so by the narration of Michelle Babb, whose warmth of delivery and voicing of all the characters, really gave it life.
An original way for a younger person to learn about history, though I personally feel that, to hold interest, the youngster would already have to have an interest. It is, however, a gentle and pleasurable revisiting of the past for older readers..

Abby is spending her summer holidays as a tutor to Merrideth, helping her with maths and English. As well as manners and her appearance but how do you get a teenager to do math homework when all she wants to do is play computer games and wait for a phone call from her father? Abby turns to the computer that has already got educational programs already on it and soon the pair of them get hooked watch a young girl live her life. Merrideth and her mother have only just moved into her aunts home after her death and knows nothing about the local history of the house or the village but that is all about to change with one click of the mouse. Together they learn about the underground railroad that saved a number of coloured slaves, people that stayed in the very house they are now living in, all while watching the computer screen. God does everything for a reason will Abby and Merrideth found out that reason?
The narrator was very good and it really felt like you had stepped back in time and I think a big part of that was because she was narrating it.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
