About this listen

From the hero whistleblower of the infamous Theranos scam, Thicker than Water is a look at never-before-revealed details behind closed doors at the company, revealing a cautionary tale of corporate bullying, gaslighting, ego, and wealth running amok in Silicon Valley.

Tyler Shultz had been in the workforce for less than a year when he emailed Elizabeth Holmes, his employer and the CEO and founder of Theranos, with concerns that the company’s lab practices were faulty, ignored quality control, and were potentially dangerous to patients. The COO fired back with a dismissive and insulting email, to which Tyler replied: “Consider this my two weeks’ notice.”

From there, his life spun out of control at the hand of Elizabeth, her team of high-powered lawyers, and the patriarch of Tyler’s own family George Shultz - one of America’s most prominent statesmen - who sat among the top of the Theranos board of directors. And yet, Tyler forged on. To protect his own conscience, the honor and reputation of his grandfather, and the health of patients worldwide.

Thicker than Water is Tyler’s as-told-to story - a harrowing and heartbreaking roller coaster of biomedical drama, family intrigue, and redemption - that will ultimately make you feel as though you are at a dinner party, seated next to a brilliant friend with one hell of a story.

Very interesting story, which I listened to when it first came out and have just listened to again. So, Tyler, with the benefit of hindsight - you put forward three reasons to your grandpa as to why he might be continuing to support Elizabeth in the face of all the evidence against her. Which do you think it was? You said your grandpa said you "did a good thing" but he does not seem to have said you did "the right thing". What, in his view, would have been "the right thing"? The cost to your family, financially and emotionally was clearly devastating and this understandably took an enormous toll on your health. Have you managed to put the resentment and anger you felt at the time behind you now? Were you able to pay your parents back for all the legal fees they had to pay out - maybe through TV appearances, interviews, etc? You realised later that there was a mechanism to report wrongdoing - but if you still did not know that - would you have done the same again, knowing how vast the consequences were? See, you have another podcast / audio book right there.

Would love to hear another - with the benefit ofi

If you're interested in the Theranos saga, this is a good listen from a personal angle. The author comes across as plausible and likeable. As other people have commented, the music is annoying, but only to start with, so please do persevere - you soon stop noticing it.

Very good

More like a podcast but offers great insight on the challenges that whistleblowers face when deciding to tell the truth against all odds and at great personal and professional risk.

Insightful listen on whistleblowing

I really enjoyed listening to this heartfelt reading. It gave extra details about the theranos story and the struggles Tyler went through. I can understand why the music was added but I personally would have preferred it without.

Great reading, not a huge fan of the music

If like me you have read and listened to all material available about this absolutely unbelievable case, you will enjoy this. Most of it has been heard elsewhere but there are a few details that really add depth to the story. I especially like the reading, casual and conversational.

A few new details to add insight

If you've listened to the original Theranos book by the WSJ journalist then this is a great way to extend the story. Enough content in here to not repeat previous points in the other book.

Great Listen

Wonderful to hear this narrated in Tyler's own voice and in a way that was so natural and honest. Tyler acknowledges his privilege in being able to speak up with the support of family, money and influence behind him, although not from his GrandDad originally..
Not only should his parents should be proud of him. Tyler took the hard path and should be very proud of himself. Great to hear this told from the horses mouth so to speak.

Great to hear this in Tyler's own way

Absolutely love it. I knew a lot about the scandal but not as much about the heroic efforts of Tyler to bring the truth to light. It was a bit so nice to have the story told by himself that it make me want to be his friend. highly recommended.

Amazing story
