About this listen

Ten years after the eruption of Vesuvius, the surrounding countryside lies buried and barren. But the destroyed cities and luxury villas on the Bay of Naples are not utterly lost.

Flavia Albia and her husband Tiberius Manlius are tasked with restoring one villa and identifying any surviving remains.

What they unearth is beyond disturbing. When the volcano erupted some people were left to their fate here, unable to escape. They included the previous owner, Publius Primus--laid out carefully and covered by falling ash.

Was Primus murdered? And, if so, why? Can Flavia Albia solve the mystery?

There Will Be Bodies looks beyond the well-known tragic events to what must have happened afterwards. It is the most intriguing crime novel of Lindsey Davis's long and celebrated career.

The family and relationships continue to grow whilst educating us on more aspects of Roman history. An unexpected setting for further mysteries.

Wonderfully narrated and immersive

I have waited in eager anticipation for the latest tale of Flavia Albia and I have not been disappointed. The characters from Ancient Rome are brought so vividly to life with their contemporary vocabulary read so beautifully by Jane Collingwood. Good mystery cleverly unravelled by Flavia and her Idile Husband. More please

another great story.

New and familiar characters woven together. Good to have Marius back a credit to the Didius clan and to remember Albia and Falcos search for family after the eruption. This gave Albia a connection to the search for Primus and a need to give rest and remembrance to the awful end of the 4 slaves in the hut.More please as it appears that Faustus and Albia are now parents to 4 children. Twins perhaps?

There is a delight in finding another novel in this series, the anticipation of reading it and now dismay that I was so greedy as to read/listen to it in less than a day. A great unravelling as the detective brain of Albia puts together the murder mystery of a Roman from 10 years ago against the dramatic backdrop of the Mount Vesuveus eruption. Good narration of a vivid and compelling tale.

The indomitable Albia detects again

I really enjoyed this novel, I’ve read the entire series and this was definitely one of the more compelling plots.

Great murder mystery!

I liked the humour, the side characters and the way the narrator does different voices so well.

I’m starting to dislike Albia though! She’s utterly spoiled, a bit narcissistic, and hypocritical (the way she can’t wait to ditch the two bereaved boys with their uncle and escape on the haunt, then moons over a dead dog more than over their plight, then pontificates over how she cares for the aforementioned poor little boys once they’re far away being ‘cared for’ by the uninterested uncle…). One cannot help feeling that her pushy, entitled nosiness derives from being bone idle most of the time- with no need to work, no hobbies, no housework and no babies.

Because of that we get these stories so that’s good. This one is a bit slow and the narrator is a bit saccharine at times, maundering on about the eruption suffering etc. I suggest speeding it up to 1.25!

Saying all that I did enjoy the mystery as it unfolded, hence the four stars.

Usual puzzle and interesting setting

As to be expected in this series, Flavia Albia takes centre stage, and her husband remains in solid support. Our informer is without the fullness of her household for the majority of this tale - and it is a pleasure to see her in a different setting. This particular novel will stimulate questions about the final segment of this novel, so best not to peek, or rather eavesdrop early. Well it got me going. Many will be thankful that death in this episode does not come bloody and brutal. I still find our heroine perhaps too young at heart for her years, but this may be on account to the performer. In this performance the prize for the best voice characterisation must be awarded for the surprise sister of the troubled and quarelling family that appears late in the novel. For other voices they are as usual. The final unravelling is Agatha Christie like, which is a neat means of a reveal to the decade long crimes and injustices. I found this particular novel less intense than some in the series and I found myself wanting the plot to be turbo-boosted. hence the star rating. The unravelling made up for the impatience. I normally look forward in ending my reviews (records of my listening really), but this review, like the novel, may help to raise a question or two. Enjoy.
