About this listen

This was meant to be the perfect trip. The northern lights. A press launch on a luxury cruise ship. A chance for travel journalist Lo Blackwood to recover from a traumatic break-in that has left her on the verge of collapse and to work out what she wants from her relationship.

Except things don't go as planned. Woken in the night by screams, Lo rushes to her window to see a body thrown overboard from the next-door cabin. But the records show that no one ever checked in to that cabin, and no passengers are missing from the boat.

Exhausted, emotional and increasingly desperate, Lo has to face the fact that her sleep problems might be driving her mad, or she is trapped on a boat with a murderer - and she is the sole witness....

A full of surprises in this
Book, but, very far fetched. I enjoyed it very much

Gripping story

I chose this book after listening to Passenger 23 (best audio book I've listened to so far and I've listened to quite a few!) following the theme of cruise ships. I enjoyed the story line and the narrator did well dealing with the range of accents and emotions throughout her reading. A good drama with some interesting twists and turns.

Great cruise ship drama

If you have read or seen "The Lady Vanishes" then you already know the plot, the only notable difference being one is set on The Orient Express and this on a Nordic cruise. It is well written, descriptive and well researched but far too similar for me.

Brilliant performance

Oh dear, I spent the entire book wishing the main Character would just fall overboard and drown! I was very quickly bored of her drippy personality. The story improved towards the end so I bumped it up a couple of stars but it is certainly not up to “The death of Mrs Westaway” (my favourite Ruth Ware book).
I am not a fan of the narrator, she is used for each of Ms Ware’s books and I personally find her a bit limited. Sorry not a great review.

Not one of her best.

After reading so many negative reviews I took a chance on this as I really enjoyed Ruth Ware's previous book. I really enjoyed the story, yes the character had a few issues she kept going on about but I thought they all came from an authentic place and made her character react as she did and go through the whole journey. I loved all the twists and found myself gripped by the end.

Wasn't expecting much but enjoyed!

Urghhh. I really loved the story but two things completely spoilt it. The greatest problem for me was Imogen Church. The narration was embarrassing. I wouldn’t have stuck it out if I’d not been on a 9 hour journey. Why on Earth does the feel the need to over- act so badly. It’s as if she’s in an amateur panto! Every single word has to be “expressed”. That’s not acting. There’s no truth in her characters. It’s horrible. All the suspense in the story is killed because she emotes every - single - word. Her characters are overblown, the male characters are even worse than the female characters and that’s saying something. She has this awful affectation with sibilant S T and D sounds. There’s nothing she does that isn’t distracting. If I was Ruth Ware I’d be asking for a different narrator. So many of the reviews on here reflect this one with regards to the narration and yet she reads so many audio books. It’s incredible that she’s still being employed.
My only other (smaller) gripe is that of the 3 Ruth Ware novels I’ve read/listened to so far all of the central female characters have either been incredibly weak a d vacuous or they’ve been strong and callous. It’s so negatively stereotypical. This is exactly the kind of image that society is trying to move away from. Please can we have a strong compassionate interesting female character for a change? This novel would have worked just as well if the main character had been more grounded. In fact it would have been more interesting and believable. There’s nothing in the story that would have suffered as a result. Plenty of strong intelligent women end up taking anti depressants at some point so even that would have worked well. In short the plot was great but that’s just not enough. I wouldn’t have seen it through if I hadn’t been travelling for 2 days straight.

Wish they’d change the narrator for Ruth Wares novels.

The first part of the book was a lot of background really. Needed to build up the doubt in the main character. The action picked up and the tension rosé dramatically. I was not anticipating the killer or the victim to be the people they turned out to be. I enjoyed this book. It was very well narrated which is always important. Easy to listen to. I read several less favourable reviews and I guess everyone’s taste is different but I definitely enjoyed and would recommend it to others.

Picked up pace and an ending I wasn’t expecting

This audio book made addictive reading and I could not put it down However I was not keen on the Narrator. The accent used for the main character made her sound stupid and Butch which was very irritating. Jude by comparison was made to sound like yogis bear.In terms of the story we were never once given a description of the main characters appearance which made me feel like I did not know her at all.I think the story would have been improved had the boat or lo's / judes been made to sound more cosy in order to provide a contrast. Aso what happened to the cat??

Great story , did not like the narrar

Very similar to Girl on the Train. I was a little hesitant due to some bad reviews but actually really enjoyed it and found the main character likeable. There were several
places I would have acted differently but that didn't detract from the story. I agree it's a little far fetched but the most true to life police thrillers are the dullest to read and I raced through this in a couple of days. Some of the claustrophobic parts made me physically shiver. If you like an exciting story that's not too cerebral give it a try. Great writing brought to life by an outstanding performance.

Totally gripped me

Having read In a dark dark wood by Ruth Ware, I decided to give this one a go. Really, really glad I did!

It's took a little while to get going to introduce you to all the characters, but this was necessary in order to provide the story with the whodunnit feel.

This really gripped me throughout and I listened to it in about two days, as I couldn't turn it off.

Brilliant performance by the narrator. The voices were really good and it is so easy to listen to her.

Loved it!

Totally gripping!
