About this listen
Sold by her mother. Enslaved in Pompeii's brothel. Determined to survive. Her name is Amara. Welcome to the Wolf Den....
Amara was once a beloved daughter, until her father's death plunged her family into penury. Now she is a slave in Pompeii's infamous brothel, owned by a man she despises. Sharp, clever and resourceful, Amara is forced to hide her talents. For as a she-wolf, her only value lies in the desire she can stir in others.
But Amara's spirit is far from broken.
By day, she walks the streets with her fellow she-wolves, finding comfort in the laughter and dreams they share. For the streets of Pompeii are alive with opportunity. Out here, even the lowest slave can secure a reversal in fortune. Amara has learnt that everything in this city has its price. But how much is her freedom going to cost her?
Set in Pompeii's lupanar, The Wolf Den reimagines the lives of women who have long been overlooked.

Totally engrossing tale of life in Pompeii
This was one of those audiobooks that draws you in to its world. It's a wonderfully narrated tale of the lives of prostitutes in a brothel in Pompeii. The women have contrasting stories of how they became slaves but they share the dream that they will someday be able to free themselves. I loved the relationships between the women and the way the author has brought to life the characters and streets of Pompeii. Really looking forward to listening to rest of the series.

Harrowing but Engaging
An interesting story about the brutal life of a slave woman living within a brothel fighting for her freedom. The author navigated the nuances of showing Amara's (and the other brothel slaves') inner strength and drive to survive while showing the male dominated setting of the brothel effectively. A harrowing tale but an engaging read.

A Thoroughly Enjoyable Ancient Historical Masterpiece!
I purchased this book after hearing Elodie Harper’s interview about it on the Exploress podcast.
I was then immediately transported back 2000 years to the ancient streets of Pompeii, which I have been fortunate enough to visit twice in my life, so could really visualise scenes from long ago in my mind, particularly after remembering what it was like venturing into the brothel there and seeing how tiny the cells were and trying to imagine what life was like for the women who inhabited it.
I enjoyed how the author wove some of the ancient artefacts into the seams of the story, as well as famous quotations and some of the graffiti from the walls of the ancient city of Pompeii.
I was also very happy when the book ended with the knowledge that there are going to be two more books to follow this, as there is definitely more to explore with this story.

Enjoyed
It's a good read. I think a different voice actor should have been chosen though. Would recomend to people who are interested in what life would be like for the Romans

Couldn’t put it down
Read it in just over a day, staying up all night to finish it.
I think it’s important to first and foremost point out that this is not an erotic book and highlights many of the horrendous experiences that were had. The content was at times graphic and sensitive, it was done so in a way that it showed how normalised violence and fear was as a part of Amaras life.
Harper clearly did her research and it was fascinating to know more about Pompeii and what life could have been like from a slaves point of view.
The writing was done so in a way that it was accessible for the reader to understand and interpret from a modern perspective whilst also learning about the daily life and culture of a slave in Pompeii during that time period.
The narration was perfect, allowing me to become even more attached to characters or adding to my disgust for others. I would love to hear more of Beamish’s work.
